jay was running.
he didn't know where he was, only that the pavement beneath his feet felt endless, stretching into the horizon no matter how fast he moved. the sky above him was a dull gray, heavy and suffocating, pressing down on his chest like an unseen force.
his breath came in short gasps, his legs burning with every step. his phone buzzed in his pocket, over and over, vibrating so violently it felt like it was digging into his skin. he didn't want to look, but his fingers moved on their own, pulling it out.
chaerin's name filled the screen.
chae 💚 7:31am
where are you?
why aren't you answering?
jay, are you okay?
seriously, what is going on with you?
are you ignoring me?
his vision blurred. the words shifted, twisting into something unreadable, letters rearranging themselves into jagged, unfamiliar shapes. his phone grew heavier, the weight unbearable, until his fingers slipped and it crashed to the ground.
the screen shattered.
and when he looked up, chaerin was there.
standing in front of him, arms crossed, foot tapping against the pavement. her face was unreadable, but her eyes bore into him, cold and unyielding.
jay opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
"where have you been?" chaerin's voice sliced through the silence.
he tried to speak, to explain, to tell her everything—how he was tired, how he was struggling, how he wanted to talk to her but didn't know how. but his throat tightened, the words clogging up like thick tar.
"i was just busy," he forced out, his voice cracking.
chaerin scoffed, shaking her head. "too busy to send a single text?"
he tried to step forward, to reach for her, but his limbs felt sluggish, like he was moving through water. she was slipping away, just out of reach.
"i just didn't want to bother you," he said, but the words felt wrong, hollow, like they didn't belong to him.
chaerin's expression hardened. "that's bullshit."
the ground beneath him cracked.
a sharp, splintering sound echoed in his ears as the pavement fractured, deep lines spiderwebbing out from where he stood. the world tilted, and suddenly, he was falling.
