why cant we for once say what
we want, say how we feel? why
can't you for once disregard the
world and run to what you know is real?

as jay stepped into kyorin's house, he was immediately surrounded by warmth. not just from the cozy lighting and the scent of home-cooked food but from the people inside. the atmosphere was lively, filled with laughter and conversation. it felt familiar like something he hadn't had in a long time.

kyorin barely had time to slip off her shoes before nari and yoojin rushed over, practically bouncing on their feet.

"oh my god, finally! what took you so long?" yoojin whined, tugging on kyorin's sleeve.

"i was about to send a search party," nari added dramatically.

kyorin rolled her eyes but smiled. "calm down, we're here now."

jay stayed slightly behind her, still unsure if he had made the right decision by accepting her invitation. he knew this was breaking one of their rules—no getting families involved—but the way kyorin had looked at him outside, her eyes practically pleading for him to stay... he hadn't been able to say no.

her mom approached with a warm smile, wiping her hands on a towel. "kyorin, happy birthday again, sweetheart." she hugged her daughter before turning to jay. "i see you've brought a friend."

before jay could answer, kyorin glanced at him before speaking. "hes just a close friend, you know this already."
jay nodded quickly, adding, "nice to see you again!"

her mom didn't look entirely convinced, but she didn't push the topic. "well, any friend of kyorin's is welcome here. come on in, make yourself comfortable. have you eaten yet?"

"oh, not yet, but i think i should—" jay started, but before he could even answer, she was already ushering him toward the kitchen, where a spread of food was laid out.

"this is all for your birthday?" jay asked, glancing at kyorin as he took in the dishes: steaming bowls of soup, plates of freshly grilled meat, side dishes arranged neatly on small plates.

"my mom goes all out for birthdays," kyorin said, rubbing the back of her neck. "she won't let anyone go hungry, so you better eat."

jay hesitated but eventually reached for a small plate, grabbing a bite of something her mom had made. as he was chewing, a voice spoke next to him. kijung leaned against the counter, arms still crossed, watching him with an unreadable expression.

"so, you're jay," kijung said casually, but there was weight behind his words.

jay swallowed his bite of food and nodded, wiping his mouth with a napkin. he took notice of the features kijung and kyorin shared. "yeah. and you're her older brother i assume."

kijung hummed. "i've heard a bit about you."

jay raised an eyebrow. "all good things, i hope."

kijung didn't answer right away, instead picking up a piece of meat from a plate and eating it thoughtfully. after a moment, he spoke. "you and my sister. what's the deal?"
