[ box 32 gone wrong ]

The blue flames danced across the greenette's skin. The smoke was suffocating as he tried to inhale. Every inch of his body burned. Feeling too weak to fight anymore, he falls limp to the ground.

As his head turns to the side, he makes eye contact with his only true friend. Horror is all that can be seen in his eyes as he screams. The students hold him back as he fights to reach Zihao. The tears fall from his eyes like rain.

Zihao gives him one last pained smile, "We'll meet again. Don't know where, don't know when. But I know we'll meet again some sunny day..."

His body erupted into flames, leaving nothing behind but the sorrow in Hu's heart. Once again, he failed to save him from those flames. Those flames that eat away on the living, leaving nothing but ash in their wake.

--------------------

A knock rippled through the small room. "Hu, you okay buddy? We brought you ramen." Shinsou held a bowl in his hand as Kirishima knocked on the door. Every since the fight, Hu refused to look at Midoriya or Sero. If they even tried to see him, he'd lock the door.

Kirishima looked and Shinsou and shrugged. "We're coming in..." The door creaked open slowly, allowing the light to spread throughout the crack. "Hu? You need to eat something..."

The male laid on Zihao's bed, a heavy blanket wrapped around him as he held onto the hoodie L/n wore out on missions. Empty bottles of water scattered around the floor as the tv mounted on the wall played "The Wind Rises." A movie the duo would watch nonstop.

His eyes were puffy and red, his entire face was greasy, and tear stained. His normally brushed hair sat in different directions. His face was blank as he stared at the movie, not even sparing the two a glance.

Shinsou decided to speak up, "uh ramen?" He held the bowl up slightly.

Hu's eyes lazily trailed over to the bowl before turning back to the tv. His gaze seemed glazed over and distant, as if he wasn't even there. His hand gestured for them to move closer.

The two smiled to each other as they walked closer, they finally got him to agree to even look at the food.

"Did Zihao not want any-"

"Oh yeah..."

Tears filled his eyes, yet never fell. His brain refused to believe the male was dead. Every time someone tried to tell him differently, he'd pull up old camera footage. Every time he'd say, "see, matcha's right there! He isn't dead, he can't be...' Denial, one of the many stages of grief. Yet, it's the only thing giving him hope. Hope that this was all just a cruel nightmare and that when he wakes up Zihao will be there.

Shinsou gave him a soft smile as he handed him the bowl. He knew better than to say anything. Grabbing Kirishima by the arm, the two left the room. Leaving Hu to mourn the loss of the only person he ever loved.

Add a little bit of the after math too just so the angst really sets it, cause "rescue mission gone wrong" wasn't enough pain
