CHAPTER 26

It's October.

  Fall is here. The leaves have started to fall but it's nothing like Oregon.

I would love to say I'm at peace right now, I mean I should be. JJ and I are good. Getting used to having a partner that treats me amazing is new but of course I welcome it. JJ has surprisingly gotten used to being tied down well but then again this man looks at me like I carry the world. I've finally noticed and accepted the way he looks at me, I hope he notices how I look at him.

Despite that—Big John is missing. It's not just he's on a work trip because he checks on John B, he's gone. No contact or anything. He told John B he'd be gone and come back rich but he never came back. It's been 2 weeks now and the small island cops have been trying to get some sort of clue but nothing is coming up.

It's hard watching John B fall apart. Sheriff Peterkin really is trying and as much as I hate her occupation—she genuinely cares for JB.

Kie hasn't even bothered to check on him or us. Bailey is doing more than Kie could ever do.

JJ and I are cuddling on the hammock outside the house. John B is basically all alone except when we spend multiple nights here. JJ is basically living here because there's an extra room now.

"JJ, you think no matter what—we can fix the problems that come up?" He holds my head closer to his chest. "Well, babe, I'm willing to. Every goddamn time."

"You think John B will be okay?" I stare at the man I consider one of my brothers. He barely eats and is constantly trying to see if there's any updates. "I have no idea but he's a strong boy. He'll survive."
