Lunch time couldn't have arrived sooner, I had to endure a full hour of maths and remain semi-conscious throughout it's duration. I would be lying if I said I wasn't pissed at Nick. If I had run into anyone else today they would have ignored me entirely, but of course Nick isn't one to avoid potentially awkward social interactions.
When I stepped out into the bustling hallway I was instantly swept into the crowd, I suppose that's the best thing about high school - it's easy to fly under the radar. The sound of students laughing and gossiping with their peers echoed through the hallways, and followed me out to the elm tree.
The tree was now a comforting sight to me, it always promised some form of serenity and meant a break from the ridiculous social hierarchies everyone else seemed so fixated on. I resumed my usual seat, leaning against the trunk of the tree facing the school, and put my headphones in, hitting shuffle play on my favourite playlist.
I sat there for a while, simply enjoying watching the other students and making up their conversations, until I was abruptly - and quite rudely interrupted - by Nick yanking my headphones off.
"Hey!" I yelled, half out of annoyance, half fear.
"Watcha listening to?" Nick replied, completely ignoring my obvious anger.
"Can you not do that?" I ensured the annoyance was evident in my voice this time, letting my words say what I wouldn't - piss off!
"What were you listening to?" He rephrased, plastering a grin on his face.
I rolled my eyes before replying.
"You probably wouldn't know it, the artist isn't that popular."
"Try me. If I know it, you've got good taste. If I don't, I'll have to stay to listen to it with you."
"Seriously?" He merely nodded in response.
The nerve of this guy. I let out a loud sigh before eventually giving in.
"I'm in Love With an E-Girl by Wilbur Soot." I mumbled.
"Never heard of it, looks like your stuck with me for the rest of lunch." He replied, a little bit too excitedly.
"Okay come on-" I began, before he cut me off.
"I'm not that annoying! And I have red liquorice. To share!" He yelled at me this time. Now I felt bad.
"It's not that your annoying, I just don't understand why you of all people would want to try to sit with me. Also how do you know I like red liquorice?" I asked.
"I'm observant." He replied, quite bluntly.
"Evidently, if you can prove you have liquorice I will give you my right earbud to listen to Wilbur Soot."
When he pulled the packet out of his backpack, I patted the spot next to me, gesturing for him to take a seat before handing him the other earbud.
I restarted the song and leant back against the tree again, looking every now and then to see if Nick was enjoying it. By the looks of it, he was. He was awkwardly bopping his head and humming the tune of the song, which was surprising seeing as he'd never heard it before.
When the final notes of the song played out, I turned to face him fully.
"So?" I asked, raising my eyebrows in anticipation.
"I enjoyed it. Now you have to listen to one of my songs-" Nick began.
"That wasn't part of the deal!" I argued.
"But I gave you liquorice." He matched my tone.
"Fine! You can pick a song."
"Jeez... You're acting like I just asked if I could borrow a couple thousand dollars."
"You basically did!"
"How?"
"My alone time under the elm tree is the closest I'll ever get to a couple thousand dollars."
"Not true... You could write music! Like that Wilbur guy!"
"Yeah I could, except I'm shit at writing lyrics and can't play any instruments."
"Well how about I get Wilbur to teach you how to play guitar?"
"How the hell would you do that?"
"I'll figure that out and in exchange... you have to go on a date with me."
"I have to go on a date with you? If you can get Wilbur fucking Soot to teach me how to play guitar?"
"Yes! And until then I'm sitting with you at this tree!"
"Okay if you get Wilbur to agree-"
"When I get Wilbur to agree!"
"Sure, when you get Wilbur to agree, I'll go on a date with you."
Before either of us could say anything else the sound of Wilbur's album was cut off by Heat Waves by Glass Animals.
"Seriously?"
"You only have to deal with this until I convince Wilbur to teach you."
"Well I sincerely hope, for my sake, that you and Wilbur get in touch soon."
The two of us kind of sat in silence after that, listening to the music, which I had now changed back to Wilbur's album, and people watching.
"Also," Nick began, before being cut off by the bell, "I've heard that song before."
We grabbed our bags and made our way back towards the school building.
"Why did you need to sit with me then?"
"Well I enjoyed it. Didn't you?"
And although I didn't respond, as one of his friends came running over to him, I had to say I did enjoy that. Nick Sapnap was pretty entertaining.

I have not updated this story in a very long time because exams have started, so of course I decided to update this instead of studying.
