He held you both in his arms, hugging you so close to his chest.

He was afraid to let go, but he wouldn't let it show.

"James." you cried softly trying not to make any sound to alert the intruder that lay knocking outside the foot of your cottage.

He hushed your lips with a finger not turning away from your eyes.

He knew.

You knew.

You both knew what the Dark Lord had come to do that night.

There was no escape for this fate.

No running.
No apparating.

Some would say it was just inevitable.

Inevitable that the child that you and James had raised for months was going to die.

That you and James were going to die.

Was it wrong for you to put on a small smile at that moment?

How stupid were you.
How stupid were the both of you.

To think you could have survived with the mercy of the Dark Lord.

You took a deep breath.

Well the Dark Lord may be a Devil knocking at your door but hell was he wrong if he didn't think we were going to not put up a fight.

James returned your smile, with as much hope that remained in the poor boy's soul.

His shaggy hair fell down his cheek and before you could push it away like you always did he was gone.

So you rushed upstairs not realizing James had forgotten his wand.

Rushed upstairs with your baby in your hand, hushing his cries by kissing his head.

And in those few unforgettable seconds, where shouts, screams, spells sprung around the house you placed your baby in his cot with tears rolling uncontrollably down your cheek.

Was it all for nothing? All that friendship.
All those shared memories.

Anger, grief, despair and fear all rushed through you.

You prayed anyone would come save James.

Save your child at least.

Then when the ominous footsteps finally trudged standing outside the baby nursery, your first instinct was to cover your baby.

You gripped the cot trying to not shake.

If only you didn't tell.

If only you didn't rat Wormtail...
