Hat-Trick

I've been in some kind of slump lately. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I can't seem to contribute anything to our games. It's been going on for like a month and a half. Not being able to score or even assist has really put me down in the dumps. The frustration that's built up since it started really doesn't help. It's a few hours to our next game and I'm sat in the stands - staring at the ice below. Bombay usually sits in the stands if there's something on his mind before a game. I guess he has a bad feeling about it as he walks over to me.

"Hey, Y/N. What are you doing here?" Bombay asks as he sits beside me. I take a moment before I say anything.

"You should bench me tonight." I tell him - not taking my eyes off the ice.

"What? Y/N, why would you say that? I'm not benching you." I don't have to look at him to know what look he has on his face.

"Oh, come on, Coach." I scoff.

"What?"

"You've seen how I've played the last couple months." I finally face him. "I can't score. I can't assist." I turn away. "I don't have the magic anymore." I mutter as I stare at my shoes - feeling useless.

"Y/N..." He sighs and puts a hand on my back. "You haven't lost anything. You're still the amazing person and player I've always known you to be."

"I've been dragging the team down. Everyone knows it. I'm surprised you haven't taken me off the roster - just get rid of me all together." I quickly wipe a stray tear from my eye.

"We both know they'd kill me if I kicked you off the team." He jokes to try cheer me up - I briefly smile weakly. "You're just in a slump - happens to the best of us. It'll be over soon, I promise."

"When? I mean it's been nearly 2 months."

"There's no set amount of time for a slump." He gives me a sympathetic look. "But I know you. You'll beat it. And when you do - I know you'll come back strong."

"Thanks, Coach." I smile as I hug him.

"I'll put you on second line. Come on, let's go get some food before the game."

Cut to the game

Sat on the bench, I watch as the starting line try to clear the puck from our defensive zone. Despite what Coach said earlier, my mind is full of fear and doubt that I'll let them down again. Suddenly, I'm snapped out of my thoughts as Coach crouches next to me.

"You ready, Y/N?" He asks.

"Not really." I answer honestly.

"Don't put too much pressure on yourself, okay? Get out there." He pats my shoulder.

"You got this, Y/N!" Connie cheers from where I was just sitting.

"You can do it!" Ken encourages.

As I jump on the ice, I try to quickly assess the situation. Hoping I'm right, I call for the puck as I stand in the neutral zone. Dwayne hears my call and slides the puck over to me. I barely skate past their blue line before I have to pass it to Averman. Narrowly avoiding being checked, I skate towards the right side of the goal. Averman sends it back to me. Instinctively, I shoot with a wrist shot. The horn blares as the puck crosses the goal line. Holy shit.

"Yeah! Y/N! Way to go!" Averman hugs me as I stand in shock as the rest of the on ice team surround me.

"That was awesome!" Goldberg laughs.

"I scored!" I'm still in shock.

"The streak is broken!" Guy celebrates.

"I'm proud of you, partner." Dwayne hugs me before everyone skates away.

As they all prepare for the face-off, I look to the bench. The Ducks all cheer for me. Coach has a proud smile plastered on his face as he nods and gives me a thumbs up. I skate into position with a newfound confidence.

Over the rest of the first period - as well as all of the second period - I managed to go into the final period with 2 goals and 2 assists under my belt. In the final couple of minutes, we're tied 4-4. It's a battle for puck possession as time flies by. Fulton and I skate in line with each other as we head on the attack. Charlie passes him the puck from behind us. His path is blocked.

"Fulton!" I yell from the other side of the ice - prompting him to send the puck over to me.

With 4 seconds left in regulation, the puck reaches my stick. Since they're close to Fulton, I use these final seconds to attempt Fult's specialty. A slapshot. The puck soars through the air and into the top left of the goal. The final horn sounds, signalling our victory.

The entire team rush onto the ice and sprint towards me. Almost instantly, they all crowd me and celebrate. They never gave up on me and it's obvious they're glad to see my return. Bombay manages to find an empty space next to me. Amongst the screams and cheers, I hear him talk to me.

"I told you. 2 assists and a hat-trick? I knew you'd come back with a bang, but that's just showing off." He laughs.

"Well, I gotta make up for lost time."

We all continue celebrating before we finally head to the locker room. There's no doubt that we're all going out tonight to continue the celebration. The slump is finally over. I'm back, baby!
