CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE:
our eyes gleamed mean

IN THE SPAN OF AN HOUR, IT FELT AS IF ALL SIX OF THEM HAD WALKED MORE THAN THEY EVER HAD IN THEIR ENTIRE LIFE.

None of them had any experience with the sport of track whatsoever. I mean.. yeah, sure, Steve may've had an advantage over them since he played basketball his entire high school years, but still! That didn't change the fact that they each had at least four more miles ahead of them!

"I mean, you have to admit, as just a feat of engineering alone, this is impressive." Dustin commented, referring to the tunnel they were walking through. "What are you talking about? It's a total fire hazard. There's no stairs, there's no exit, there's just an elevator that drops you halfway to hell." Steve shook his head. "They're Commies. . You don't pay people, they cut corners." Erica shrugged. "To be fair to our Russian comrades, I don't think this tunnel was designed for walking." Robin began. "I mean.. think about it, they developed the perfect system for transporting that cargo." Robin continued. "It all comes into the mall like any old delivery." Dustin added. "And then they load it up onto those trucks and nobody's the wiser." Robin scoffed. "You think they built this whole mall so they could transport that green poison?" Steve questioned. "I very seriously doubt it's something as boring as poison. It's gotta be much more valuable, like promethium or something." Dustin replied. "What the hell is promethium?" Steve asked. "It's what Victor Stone's dad used to make Cyborg's bionic and cybernetic components." Robin explained. "Isn't Cyborg that metal looking guy?" Valerie asked, which both Dustin and Robin nodded in reply to. "You're all so nerdy, it makes me physically ill." Erica held her stomach, dramatically shaking her head. "No, no, no, no. Don't lump me in with them. I'm not a nerd, alright?" Steve shook his head at Erica. "Why so offended, Steve?" Valerie snickered. "Yeah. Afraid to losing cool points to a ten-year old child?" Robin teased. "No, I'm just saying I don't know jack-shit about Prometheus." Steve shrugged. "Promethium." Dustin corrected. "Prometheus is a Greek mythological figure, but whatever. All I'm saying is, it's probably being used to make something." Dustin replied. "Or power something." Robin added. "Like what?" Selina asked. "Like a nuclear weapon." Dustin propounded. "Totally." Robin nodded. "Walking towards a nuclear weapon, that's great. . That'd be great." Steve said sarcastically. "But if they're building something, why here? I mean.. Hawkins, seriously.. of all places?" Robin questioned, which proposed an idea in each Valerie, Selina, Steve, and Dustin's mind. The Upside Down. The four of them began to slow down the pace they were walking at, sharing a look with each other. "At the very best, we're a toilet stop on your way to Disneyland.. but, maybe that's it." Robin continued. "You think the Russians know?" Dustin asked quietly. "About the. ." Steve began, not finishing his sentence since this was all confidential matter. "They could." Dustin shrugged. "So.. all of this shit is connected?" Valerie asked. "Maybe." Dustin nodded. "How?" Steve questioned. "I don't know, but it's. ." Dustin began. "Possible." The four of them finished his sentence in unison. "I'm sorry, is there something you four would like to share with the class?" Robin interrupted the four, both her and Erica turning to look back at them. The four shared a look, contemplating on what do next. Considering how serious this situation could turn out to be, it was an understatement saying that they needed to finish their conversation. All six of them slightly jumped at the sound of static and the same Russian code they had cracked coming from the Walkie-talkie. "Walkie." All six of them said in unison, rushing over to Erica for her backpack. Erica slung the backpack off of her shoulder, grabbing the Walkie-talkie from the back pocket. The sound of the same man speaking Russian was practically music to their ears, considering that this meant that people were nearby. Robin began repeating the words being spoken, looking up at the five. "It's the code." Robin said. "Wherever that broadcast is coming from—" Dustin began, Robin soon finishing his sentence. "It's close." Robin nodded. "And if there's one thing we know about that signal. ." Robin began. "It can reach the surface." Dustin finished Robin's sentence. They each looked up at the roof above them, listening as the code continued to repeat. "Let's go."

There was a comfortable silence between the six as they continued walking through the tunnel, until Selina spoke up. "Okay, the end of this tunnel has to be somewhat near. I cannot stand this shit any longer." Selina whined. "Hey, at least our legs will probably look amazing after this." Valerie shrugged, trying to lighten Selina's mood, which clearly failed due to the unfazed expression on Selina's face. At this point, Valerie knew something was up with Selina. She hadn't been really talkative, especially towards Valerie, which was unusual for the blonde, especially considering that this only started a couple of days ago. Oh well!
