The silence between Dean and Katie seemed to stretch on until Dean leaned forward and turned the volume dial up, increasing the steady ring of Zeppelin. It cut through the air and pulled Katie from her thoughts, and in all honesty, she was thankful for the interruption.
She spared a glance towards Dean and noticed his lips were drawn in a tight line and his eyes were centered on the lonely road. It didn't take much for Katie to notice his frustration. It was written all over his face. Not to mention, he'd decided to turn the radio up. She knew it was a habit of his—one that always annoyed Sam.
It wasn't hard for her to gauge his emotions. Call it a talent, and taking into consideration that she's known Dean for more than half her life allowed her a bit of insight into his emotional tendencies. Most of the time, she could read him like a bold print book, and right now that extensive book had the audio version blaring at max volume. She knew him, and she knew he was trying to drown out his racing thoughts. In a way, she could relate . . .
Once she noticed they had passed a sign that said they were about four-hundred miles to California, she pursed her lips and leaned forward to turn the volume down a few notches. That earned a not so friendly side glare from Dean. Call it an equivalent to a stingy old man with his thermostat . . .
