Melanie and Don look at each other after the baby announcement and our engagement.

Dakota squeezes my hand and I look down at her. She's nervous because she's chewing on her lip. I free her bottom lip and smile at her for reassurance.

"Did you guys get engaged because you got pregnant?" Don asks smoothly

"No dad. We were engaged before that. Technically." Dakota says

"Technically?"

"I was pregnant before we got engaged but Jamie didn't know till after"

"Was this a mistake?" he says

"No." Dakota quickly shuts down that question

"Don't you guys think this is too soon? I mean you guys are barley here, breaking up on and off and for you guys to drop this bomb on us?" Melanie says

"We've been together for about 2 years" Dakota reassures

They all look at me as if waiting on me. "We're happy and we hope you guys are" is all I manage to say

"Of course we're happy for you guys" Melanie smiles "We just wanted to know this is what you guys wanted. Forming a family is incredible." She comes forward and hugs Dakota and I.

"I am happy for you guys." Damon smiles at a distance " Can I speak to you Jamie?" He says

"Sure" I calmly reply

"Be nice to him daddy." Dakota calls out as Don and I head to the back yard.

-

Don takes out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and offers me one

"No thanks, I'm actually asthmatic" I say nonchalantly

"Oh I'm sorry" He puts his cigarette back in its pack "Beer?"

"That's more like it."

We settle on coronas and sit on the patio chairs

"Dakota's my only girl. She's my angel." He begins "You could see why I'm dumbfounded by your news"

"Of course"

"You love her?" he asks

"Of course. She's the love of my life ever since I laid my eyes on her."

"The way you took care of her when that incident happened. I'm forever in your debt."

"You're not" I sip my beer "I'd do anything for her."

"And I appreciate that so much" he pats the back of my shoulder

We continue to talk about Dakota and eventually drift our conversation about the future. I tell him about Dulcie and he wishes me well.

As we wrapped up our conversation we head inside.

Don walks elsewhere to get us another beer I presume
