"When I first joined S.H.I.E.L.D., I thought I was going straight, but I guess I just traded in the KGB for HYDRA. I thought I knew those lies I was telling, but I guess I can't tell the difference anymore." ~Natasha Romanoff

CHAPTER THREE

"Do you have a sister?" Pietro asks, curiously as I hand him a cup of hot cocoa. It's late afternoon, and we've been talking almost non-stop. Behind all the angst and impatience, he's actually very sweet.

"Yes, actually," I answer.

"What is her name?" His blue eyes stare intently into mine.

"Rebecca Marie, but I used to call her Bex." I look down into the dark, swirling pool of chocolate.

"Used to?"

I sigh. "Not everyone has such a great relationship with their sibling, Pietro." I give him a half smile.

He smirks, looking out the living room window. "Wanda is amazing, but she can be a real pain in my ass. All that magic, being so grounded and connected to everything, I am nothing like that."

"You're light on your feet, always moving," I add. "You're impatient, rude, arrogant, sometimes selfish, an ass-"

"Hey!"

"But," I say, holding up a finger to silence him. "You're also loyal, kind, ahead of the game, smart, and pretty sweet, especially to Wanda."

Pietro turns his head towards me. "You really think so?"

"I know so. I read your comics. I probably know you better than you know you."

"You are pretty nice as well, Glory," Pietro whispers. "I am sorry for the way I acted earlier. I was scared. I didn not know where I was, or what happened, and you were way too nice. Far too nice to be genuine."

I tilt my head to the side, examining his face as it turns down, almost ashamed. He closes his eyes. "You really thought I was out for something?"

"Think about where I was raised. Where I have been for the past few years. Can you try to understand?"

"Oh, trust me. I do. My family hasn't been pretty either."

"You have a father? A mother?" Pietro's attention goes back to me.

"Both, but neither in my life."

Pietro must notice my change in mood, because he scoots closer on the sofa and places a hand over mine. "I am sorry," he says in a hushed, sweet voice. His accent makes it even gentler, and I think I've died and gone to Valhalla.

"It's okay...actually, it's not okay, but I'm okay. I'm better off now. Mom was never around and Dad was overbearing. My sister slept with my ex, so it's all good now." I take a deep breath in, controlling my thoughts, emotions, and mindset. "I prefer being a lone ranger, it's made me into a super soldier." I chuckle at the reference.

"Well," Pietro says, after a moment of gathering our thoughts, "you, my new friend, and I are similar souls indeed."

I smile, just slightly. "Thank you, Pietro."
