emersyn had finally found a manageable breathing pattern. her head was hidden in her palms between her legs, still shaking.

"we can stop if you want." colby was saying from beside her, but she'd yet to move from her half-fetal positionon the curb.

she felt a figure bend down to her level, and then she felt a pair of hands grab her own and pull them from her face. she knew just who it was immediately. "do you want to stop? we can go home." his voice was so soft and so were his hands.

after another moment went by and she was still unresponsive to him, he reached at her again, this time taking ahold of her cheek and pulling her face up so she could look at him. "hey,"

another beat of silence before she sniffled, and unraveled herself from the curb. "it's okay. i'm okay." emersyn had never felt anything like that before, she thought she might have been going mad. matt was still at her shoulder when it happened, his hand still in hers. and that was when she felt a pull at her hair. it spooked her good. matt and her were both more towards the back of the group. there was no one behind her, and it couldn't have been matt, because they of course were still holding hands.

"are you sure?" sam asked her.

"no, yeah. yes, let's keep going."

they kept investigating for another couple of hours, and they made it all the way up until three am. eventually though, the owners had to come back and it was their time to go. they spent the night in a motel a few blocks away, and when they woke up in the morning, they all found waffle house nearby. that's where they ate breakfast.

emersyn had yet to change out of her pajama pants when they found a booth in the corner of the small restaurant. it felt unreal that morning. just something in the damp air. matt hadn't left her side since last night. he wasn't treating her any differently nor delicately. but, he made sure to stay in close range. almost like a protective mother bear. "hey, chris." from down the table, chris shot his head up towards his brother. "guess what i'm going to order."

chris gave a disapproving look when emersyn answered under her breath, "chocolate chip pancakes."

"you're a fucking child, matt."

"fine by me."

colby ended up ordering the same thing, which resulted in him getting absolutely reamed by chris. "you can call me a child for eating pancakes all you want and i'm not going to argue because i literally ordered this off the kids menu." the brunette grabbed the menu from the table and held it up, laughing.

while emersyn held her gut in a laugh, matt didn't look all too amused. it wasn't as if he didn't like colby. he didn't have anything against him, in fact, he'd grown to think he was a really cool guy over the short amount of time they'd spent together. it was more or less the fact that everytime he opened his mouth, emersyn let out the girliest giggle.

emersyn was not a giggler.

couldn't she see that he was trying? wasn't he? all he wanted was her. maybe he just wasn't making it clear enough. matt had never been good at communicating his emotions, not verbally. he was the type of person who had the tendency to assume everyone should always know what was going through his mind all the time. another bad habit of his.
