Chapter 26: History will be made

 -

It was one day before the battle and the remainder of us who had stayed behind to plan were on our way to meet the rest of the army. Only Regina, Lulu, Relania and Dalsa stayed behind. I had insisted that they remain safe, and no one argued. Regina was too old to fight and Dalsa had no idea how to, but Relania and Lulu did so they would protect them if it came down to it, but I prayed that it wouldn't.

On my right was Caterine with Desmond on my left, then there was Alexia and Jude one step behind Caterine, and Kieran marched with Kila behind Desmond. We had all insisted that Kila stay behind, but she had refused, saying that she would rather die beside us on the battle field than cooped up in a castle. There was nothing we could do.

Reigner was far ahead, she wanted to see Rolan and make sure that he was okay; there was a scuffle last night that left a few injured, but we had outnumbered the mini ambush and had swiftly won that fight. But we still hadn't won the war.

As we finally came into the clearing cheers sounded and I stopped to stare at the copious amounts of fey that stood before me. There were hundreds, maybe thousands of them and I was amazed, I had no idea that they would stand behind me.

I was half human, so I had expected them to choose only a pure blooded fey, but it didn't look that way. I saw all of my light guards, all of the frost fey guards and many other blue tinged fey that resembled corpses from the Winter Court, and all of the golden thistle fey and other shining fey from the Summer Court. I also saw many water fey including the smiling Laurel, a horde of tiny pixies, a huge assortment of animal type fey, I even saw Rodan in amongst the deer fey with huge antlers that stretched towards the sky. I even saw trees thumping around at the back of the crowd, and I recognised Melanie as she calmed them; they didn't seem to like the crowds. Thousands of fey were here to join me as we fought the war once and for all, and it sent shivers down my spine.

  We were going to win.

 -

A bass-tuned horn sounded eerie in the silent night with the hollow thumping of the drum accompanying it. Caterine had told me that it was tradition before a battle to sing the songs of our ancestors. Frankly, it sent shivers down my spine. Slowly, one by one, the fey around me started singing. First it was a low sounding hum, then a few twinkly sounding voices sounded, allowing me to pick out a few of the words, then they all joined together in a harmonious and enchanting song.

It was all in fey of course, but by now I had learnt enough to know that they were praying to our ancestors to let us win the battle and to let as little fall as possible, and those who did fall, would be welcomed to them with wide arms.

I was entranced by the music, and it almost felt like I was losing myself. Then I felt Desmond tug on my hand.

"Come with me," He whispered in my ear.

I followed him as if I was in a trance.

He took me quite a fair walk away until the music was barely audible.

"I forgot that you still have a hint of human in you," He said, grinning at me in a teasing way.

"What do you mean?" I asked, still a little light-headed from listening to the music.

"Faeries lure travellers into the woods using enchanting music where we then treat them to food and wine, effectively trapping them in our world. The music doesn't usually sway a pure blooded fey, but you're not exactly pure blooded. I had to get you out of there before something went bad," He explained.

"But it was so beautiful," I whined back.

He gave me a hard look, "Ella, listen to yourself."

It took me a moment to realise, but that music had affected me more than it should have. "Will that always happen?"

He sighed, "I hope not, I was really enjoying myself."

I thumped him on the arm but I was grinning as he started to laugh.

"Does it scare you? The war I mean," I asked, making him stop laughing altogether.

"No, not when I'm with you. I know that tomorrow we may die, but I am not afraid because I know that I will let nothing happen to you as long as I am still standing by your side, and if we both shall die, then we will die together and I take comfort in that. I love you, and because of that, I am no longer afraid," He whispered, gently grasping my face with his hands, leaning in.

"I will never let anything happen to you either, I love you, and for that my fear is only minimal, because like you said, I am still human, and humans are always afraid."

"Yes, but you are also fey, and fey are able to overcome their fear more easily than a human."

"I will not lose you," I said as a tear slid down my face.

"And you won't," He whispered back as he brushed it away.

 -

"Dance with me!" Reigner yelled out to me over the loud fast-paced music that was now playing. Desmond and I had returned earlier when he knew that it was no longer the eerie music used to lure travellers, but instead was the music used in celebrations for fey.

"Okay!" I yelled back as I grabbed her hand. We immediately spun around and around in circles, dancing and laughing. Tonight none of us would have any worries; we would only celebrate and take comfort in who we are and what we are fighting for.

Some days I found more comfort in the fey than the humans, and the fey lure humans to their death. But I suppose, humans lure humans to their death, and that's worse.

"Are you ready for tomorrow?" I just managed to hear Reigner shout over the loud music and laughter.

"No, but I'm as ready as I'll ever be!" I yelled back.

"That's the spirit!" She laughed as she dragged me to the side so we could hear each other better. "And just know, we are all here for a reason; we believe in you Ella, so show us what you're made of. Tomorrow, history will be made."

I nodded and she grinned, making me remember her when we first met. She was in a dungeon, all of the hope beaten out of her, but she still would not give up, I admired her for that. I also knew that the rest of the people I had met- Rodan, Laurel, Kieran, Desmond, Caterine, Dalsa, Relania, Alexia, Kila, Altain and many more- would never give up so easily either and would fight for their freedom no matter what. I owed them that much, so tomorrow I will not let them down.
