After completing Falkner's task, Jaden's egg hatched and he was going to have his first gym battle in Johto.
The next day...
Jaden arrived back at the Violet City Gym to challenge Falkner.
Falkner: The day has finally come.
Jaden: Yep. I'm here to get my first badge in Johto.
Falkner: It's not going to be that easy. Let's begin.
Referee: This will be a two-on-two battle. The battle will be over when one side's Pokemon will be unable to continue. Furthermore, the challenger is allowed to make substitutions. The gym leader is not. Now, bring out your first Pokemon.
Falkner: I choose you, Dodrio!
Jaden: Let's go, Cyndaquil!
Referee: Begin the match!
Falkner: Dodrio, use Fury Attack!
Jaden: Cyndaquil, use Smokescreen!
Cyndaquil released smoke which covered the entire battlefield.
Falkner: Stay strong, Dodrio. Keep cautious.
Jaden: Use Swift!
Swift was fired through the smoke and hit Dodrio.
Falkner: Dodrio, use Agility!
Dodrio raised its speed.
Falkner: Now use Peck!
Dodrio's three heads sharpened their pecks and charged at Cyndaquil.
Jaden: Cyndaquil, use Ember!
Cyndaquil fired small flames at the incoming Dodrio. It dodged the attack and landed Peck on Cyndaquil.
Jaden: Cyndaquil, no!
Falkner: Dodrio, use Wing Attack!
Jaden: Cyndaquil, use Smokescreen!
Cyndaquil covered the battlefield with smoke.
Falkner: Dodrio, use Agility then run around.
Jaden: What?
Dodrio raised its speed and sprinted around the field.
Jaden: Cyndaquil, keep using Swift!
Cyndaquil kept firing Swift across the field. Swift kept landing hits on Dodrio and caused it to slow down.
Falkner: Dodrio, use Fury Attack!
Jaden: Cyndaquil, dodge them!
Dodrio's three heads kept attacking Cyndaquil and Cyndaquil kept dodging them.
Jaden: That's good, Cyndaquil. Now use Quick Attack!
Falkner: Dodrio, use Wing Attack!
Cyndaquil and Dodrio charged at each other and both landed hits on the opponent.
Jaden: Cyndaquil!
Falkner: Dodrio no!
Referee: Both Pokemon are unable to battle. This is a double knockout.
Jaden: A double knockout on the first match. Return Cyndaquil. You battled well. Get a good rest.
Falkner: Dodrio return. You battled well. Get some rest. I must say: I didn't expect that outcome.
Jaden: Thanks. But it comes down to this.
Falkner: Yes. Now, fly my friend! Go Pidgeot!
Jaden: It's his Pidgeot huh? Go Arcanine.
Falkner: It's a battle with our most trusted Pokemon.
Jaden: Yep. Come out, guys.
Jaden brought out Dratini, Spinarak and Hoothoot to watch the match.
Falkner: What's going on?
Jaden: I want these guys to watch this battle so they know what they'll be doing soon.
Falkner: I see. They may not be battling, but they get to see what it's like. Trainers and their partner Pokemon.
Referee: If you're ready, begin the match.
Falkner: Pidgeot, use Agility!
Pidgeot raised its speed.
Jaden: Arcanine, use Extreme Speed!
Falkner: Pidgeot, fly up! Now use Aerial Ace!
Pidgeot flew up and came soaring down toward Arcanine.
Jaden: Use Flare Blitz!
Arcanine powered up and charged toward the incoming Pidgeot. Both Pokemon collided and took damage. Arcanine took more than Pidgeot due to the recoil.
Falkner: Pidgeot, use Sand Attack!
Pidgeot flapped its wings toward the ground and sand was thrown.
Jaden: Arcanine, close your eyes!
Arcanine closed its eyes so sand didn't get in its eyes.
Jaden: Use Flamethrower!
Falkner: Fly up, Pidgeot!
Pidgeot flew up.
Jaden: Use Flamethrower!
Arcanine fired flamethrower in the sky.
Falkner: Use Agility and dodge.
Pidgeot raised its speed and dodged the attack.
Falkner: Now use Aerial Ace!
Jaden: Arcanine, keep your eyes on Pidgeot!
Falkner: What? He's not dodging? Alright Pidgeot, use Aerial Ace!
Pidgeot was coming in even faster.
Jaden: Not yet. Now! Use Flamethrower!
As soon as Pidgeot got close enough, Arcanine fired a powerful flamethrower and landed a direct hit.
Falkner: Pidgeot no!
Jaden: Finish this with Psychic Fangs!
Arcanine struck Pidgeot with fangs of psychic power.
Falkner: Pidgeot no!
Referee: Pidgeot is unable to battle. Arcanine is the winner. The winner of this gym battle is the challenger, Jaden.
Jaden: Yes. Good job, Arcanine.
Jaden's Pokemon cheered along from beside him.
Falkner: Pidgeot return. You battled well and soared very high. Get a good rest.
Jaden: Return guys.
Falkner approached Jaden.
Falkner: That was well done. Here is your reward: the Zephyr Badge.
Jaden received the Zephyr Badge.
Jaden: Thanks. My first Johto gym badge. Bye for now.
Falkner: Goodbye Jaden.
Jaden exited the gym and headed to the Pokemon Centre. After Nurse Joy healed his Pokemon, he headed down the next route.
Jaden: Okay, where's the next gym badge? Azalea Town. And he uses bug types. That should be simple enough if I train Cyndaquil and Hoothoot. Let's go.
After winning his first badge in Johto, Jaden heads to his next stop, Azalea Town.
