Jaden's first gym battle in Sinnoh was near after cycling across a path that would make their way to Oreburgh quicker.
Jaden: Okay. Oreburgh City. I'm itching to challenge the gym, so let's waste no time.
Jaden and Arcanine headed straight to the gym and found something unfortunately familiar.
Jaden: It's closed?! After heading all the way to Eterna City and back and my luck still continues.
Miner: If you're looking for Roark, he'll be in the mine just down there.
Jaden: Thank you. Well, no time to waste.
They headed to the mine to find Roark, the gym leader.

Roark was in the mines, digging away as it was his usual thing.
Jaden: Roark?! Are you here?!
Roark: Huh? Did someone call me?!
Jaden: That was me. Are you digging for fossils?
Roark: Yep. It's my job, other than being gym leader. I take it you're a challenger?
Jaden: I am. But we can wait until you're finished.
Roark: No need. I'm about finished exploring this area for fossils. A gym battle is perfect for me to recharge. Follow me to the gym.
Roark led Jaden to his gym.

Inside, the battlefield was a rocky field, as it was a rock type gym.
Roark stood on the left and Jaden on the right.
Roark: One of my workers will be the referee, if that's okay with you?
Jaden: That's fine with me.
Referee: This gym battle between Roark, the gym leader and Jaden, the challenger will now begin! This will be a three-on-three battle and the battle will be over when one side's Pokemon are unable to continue. Only the challenger is allowed to make substitutions. Bring out your first Pokemon.
Roark: Geodude, let's go!
Jaden: Monferno, go!
Roark: A Monferno. I see you've evolved your Chimchar before coming here. Not many trainers do that.
Jaden: I know not to make simple mistakes like that.
Referee: Let the battle begin!
Roark: Geodude, Rollout!
Geodude attacked by rolling with great speed and power.
Jaden: Get ready to use Mach Punch!
Monferno was readying to attack with a punch.
Roark: Geodude, use the rock to jump!
Geodude rolled towards a nearby rock and lept above Monferno.
Jaden: What?!
Geodude landed behind Monferno and landed a direct hit.
Jaden: A surprise early on.
Roark: That's not the only surprise. Geodude, Rock Polish!
Geodude polished its body to reduce drag and raised its speed.
Roark: Rollout, again!
Geodude rolled again, but this time, with more speed.
Jaden: Use Flame Wheel!
Monferno cloaked itself in flames and attacked like a burning wheel.
Both Pokemon clashed upon impact and were equal in strength.
Jaden: Mach Punch!
Monferno quickly attacked with a punch.
Roark: Block it!
Geodude caught Monferno's punch.
Jaden: Now, Flame Wheel!
Monferno cloaked itself and Geodude in flames and spun like a wheel.
Monferno and Geodude were spinning across the field.
Jaden: Throw Geodude!
Monferno launched Geodude across the field and into a large rock, dealing a lot of damage.
