Back in the Tortuga, Clover tells Aviva and Koki what happened and thanks Martin and Chris once again. Later on the group decides to give Clover a tour around. She was incredibly fascinated by Aviva's craftsmanship and design work. Aviva thanks her.
One by one, the crew goes to bed. Clover wants to stay here longer. Surely the others won't mind, right? She sneaks back to her RV as quietly as possible and unlocks the door to grab her sleeping bag and pillow. She silently closes the door, but not before the alarm accidentally sounds off. She frantically fumbled her keys before turning it off, standing there for a moment to replay a ton of scenarios that could happen if she goes back inside the Tortuga.
She's too tired to think of them, though, so she simply tiptoes back in the dim-lighted main area. To her fright, Aviva and Koki stand in front of her. Their hair slightly sticking out, their eyes droopy, they don't feel like yelling, or even talking. But then they realize it's just Clover, so their worries are lessened.
"I'm sorry!" She loudly whispers. "I, uh, I guess I should've asked you beforehand, but can I sleep on the upper floor? I like the view and moonlight shining through," she points upward. The two half-awake girls nod. "Thank you!" She quietly yells before tiptoeing past them again.
"Clover, one last thing," Aviva calls. Clover slowly turns her head at them, still frightened and nervous. "You're welcome here any time," she calmly smiles.
Koki smiles in agreement, too. Clover hums and proceeds to go to the next floor. Aviva and Koki wait for her again and watch her set up her sleeping arrangements. Clover waves from above. The two wave back.
"Good night," Clover mouths.
"Night," they silently mouth back, their voices only slightly audible.
Aviva and Koki climb back into their hammocks. Clover lays down and admires the starry night, the illuminating moon, the thin, faint clouds ever so slightly obstructed the moon, she's mesmerized. She could look at this for hours.
She takes out her phone and takes some pictures. Then, she takes out her journal and pen from her bag and begins to sketch the sky and write down her thoughts about the moon and its moonlight.
Skrtch, skrtch, skrtch.
Zzzzz.
The only sounds filling the room is Jimmy's snoring and the sound of Clover's pen moving.
Someone else starts to stir in the middle of the night, sitting up, focusing their sight on Clover under the moon's light.
"Clover? You're still awake?" A quiet, familiar voice gets her attention. It's Chris.
"Yeah...I got distracted by the moon. Isn't it pretty, though?" She shifts her focus back to the moon and journal, continuing to write.
"Sure is," he happily sighs. "What're you writing, anyways?"
"Anything I can think of about the moon," she says, still looking in her journal.
She clicks her pen and places it in the middle, then looks at Chris with a soft expression.
"I don't know if this'll sound silly, but do you think plants will become sustainable on the moon or other planets in the future? Think about it; we've come so far with technology and space exploration that we're finally able to do so. Maybe I could create the first ever plant sanctuary on the moon? Haha! Isn't it fun thinking of crazy ideas?" She rambles.
He smiles, but Clover takes this as a way of him not paying much attention. She clears her throat and turns away.
"Unless it's not. It's silly. Just plain silly," she shuts herself down.
"Oh, no, not at all. Think of all the nocturnal animals that really come alive at night. Bats, raccoons, owls, they can get up to some pretty crazy things," he jokes.
"Some flowers can bloom at night, too. Like the night gladiolus, the night phlox, the moonflower. Although they can kinda be difficult to maintain. I did a couple of sketches when I visited Florida months ago," she flips back to a page similar to the one she's working on now.
"Wow. I didn't know certain flowers can bloom at night," Chris is impressed.
"They sure can," Clover starts to feel more calm. Usually, she doesn't talk about plant facts. Mainly because of previous experiences, but everyone here seems to have a love and understanding for living things. So, why not add greenery to the conversation?
For the rest of the night, Chris and Clover exchange animal and plant facts. They become more knowledgeable about each other's interests.
"I didn't know spider monkeys spend a large amount of their lives living in the treetops, almost never coming down. They're so dependent on trees!"
"And I didn't know—well, that there's so many species of flowers!"
The two of them laugh and continue to talk about plants and animals until sunrise. They hadn't even realized until they heard birds chirping and Aviva waking up first.
"Did you two stay up all night?" She yawns, rubbing her eye.
"Woah. I guess we did," Clover faces Chris.
"Maybe I can sleep for a few more minutes..." Chris lays down on the floor.
"Are you sure you can sleep there?" She groggily asks. Chris immediately starts snoring. "Guess that answers my question."
"You sure you don't need any sleep, Clover?" Aviva returns with a cup of coffee.
"I stayed up for twenty-four hours multiple days in a row and I've never regretted it. Nature never sleeps!"
