Laryngitis

"Nick honey I've got you. Nick breathe come on!"
"Nick!" He snaps out of his daze, looking up to see the whole glee club staring at him, "Erm sorry! What, what's up?"
Mr Schue points at him, "This, this is exactly what I'm talking about! Nick get up here you're singing!"
"Right now?"
"Yep now! Just sing how you're feeling make it authentic. In this exact moment what's happening in your life." Mr Schue tells him. Nick reluctantly stands up walking down the steps as he tells the band what song to play, grabbing a guitar for himself.
"Here goes nothing." He whispers to himself, feeling as the overwhelming emotions try to take over him. He plays the opening chords to Booster Seat by Spacey Jane.

"I'm moving through the night
My soul's just a container
I can't tell you what I'll write
They're words without the paper
Take my ego for a drive
Leave it out at the 110 sign
In the kitchen after five
In the hallway before nine
And if it wasn't for that time in the taxi
When you called it out, you said it was anxiety
Well, you held me from the back of the front seat
And you told me all the times that you'd lied to me
Well, I felt like a kid, like I could touch my feet
As they hovered above the ground in my booster seat
Oh-oh-oh
Well, it feels like that again
Drink a jug of mind eraser
Feel it burn and watch it glow
All my friends on a retainer
And I'm almost out of dough
And if it wasn't for that time in the taxi
When you called it out, you said it was anxiety
Well, you held me from the back of the front seat
And you told me all the times that you'd lied to me
Well, I felt like a kid, like I could touch my feet
As they hovered above the ground in my booster seat
Oh-oh-oh
Well, it feels like that again
Oh, I'm waiting for it patiently
My unmarked grave, my salty sea
In my pants too short, in my shame up to my knees
In a wave of guilt I roll and in a hurricane I breathe
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And if it wasn't for that time in the taxi
When you called it out, you said it was anxiety
Well, you held me from the back of the front seat
And you told me all the times that you'd lied to me
Well, I felt like a kid, like I could touch my feet
As they hovered above the ground in my booster seat
Oh-oh-oh
Well, it feels like that again."

Everyone claps as Nick finishes and he just feels relieved that he's got it out the way.
"That was a great example of what you can do this week. I look forward to your song that you choose for where you are right now in your life Nick!" Mr Schue tells him.
"Wait what! I have to do a second one? That's not fair!" Nick complains as Mr Schue taps his shoulder, "Life isn't fair."

The news about his mother shook Nick  to his core. He'd just got her back and now he hadn't got a choice on whether or not she'd leave again. When she told him about the cancer he collapsed on the front lawn, crying like a baby and hyperventilating. She held him tight and rocked him like he was a newborn, cradling his face and wiping away his tears.
Eventually they wound up in the living room, him cuddled into her side, as she stroked through his hair that was still growing back,
"Nick?"
"Yes mom."
"Do you hate me? I would hate me and don't hold back because of what's happening to me, just tell me the truth I can handle it." She whispers out. Nick contemplates his answer for a second,"I never hated you. Seeing you partying on the cover of magazines while I was stuck here with him. It broke me, I felt so unwanted. I felt unloved and abandoned, but now..." he takes a deep breath, "I couldn't hate you even if I tried. The second pops told me the truth, it was like everything made sense. The bad press, the party reputation you got. I just, I thought you willingly left me with him and I wanted to hate you, but every time I tried that stupid Irish song would pop into my head that you'd sing around the house. That and walking on sunshine are like the only memories I have off you from childhood."
She sits up and looks at him, "Galway girl? Do you know why I love that song so much?"
He shakes his head no, as she continues, "It was playing on the radio when you were born in Dublin. Get your guitar."
"No I really don't feel like..." he starts, but sees the look on her face, "Fine!"
