chapter 17 — the marriage
We continued our journey and when the night came, we took some rest in the middle of the desert- which, of course, I could not fall asleep at all. All the memories scrambled through my mind and it weighed down my shoulders.
I stared at the cloudy sky, thinking of the same thing over and over again. I sat on the ground as I let out a small sigh. By chance, my eyes caught a light that wasn't far from us. "Newt." I woke him up by shaking his body a bit, "wake up. I saw something."
He woke up and looked at me with his half-asleep eyes. "What is it?"
I pointed at the light, "There. It must be someone who lives there."
By Newt's command, I woke Thomas up. By doing so, I took a chance to touch his cheek. "Thomas...wake up."
Just right when we were about to walk, the ground beneath us grumbled as the lightning struck us. We ran to where we saw the light, and lucky us, my instincts were right about another settlement in the middle of the desert.
"Open the door!!" Thomas yelled at Frypan.
We got in right after the door was opened; leaving Minho at the back. Yet, before Minho could make it inside, lightning struck him and he fell to the ground; unconscious.
"Minho!!" Thomas ran back to Minho and brought him into the building.
I backed away a bit and stable my breathing; trying not to panic again.
Newt squeezed my shoulder softly, "you good?"
I nodded and I glanced at Minho. Thank God, he's alive. "This place is smelly..." I told them.
"Yeah. Did you guys smell that?" Teresa added.
I pointed my torchlight and the unpleasant face appeared in front of us. A crank's scream filled the entire building as they were trying to get loose from the chain that was strangling them. Thomas pulled me behind him and I squeezed his arm.
The light turned on, which gave us a clear sight of the cranks they strangled in this horrible place.
"Guess you met our guard dogs." A woman's voice echoed around the room. A short-haired woman walked toward us, which I assumed was the one who stayed there. Her eyes scanned us but lain on me as her expression changed. "No one survives the scorch for a day." She said as she walked back inside, "Come on, unless you wanna stay with them."
We might never know who they were, but staying with this crank was not an option. We followed her inside the abandoned building with all eyes on us. We got to the other floor and most of the wall had been demolished.
A man around 40 scanned us up and down as Thomas pulled me close to him.
"Oh, look what we have here. I don't want her to hear anything." The man gazed at the short-haired woman, "You know what to do."
She pulled my arm and a sudden hit on my head made me lose consciousness.
In front of me was Ava Paige in her professional outfit as a doctor, which was my old job. The pain of losing 'him' still burned inside my heart.
Ava clasped her hands on the table with a look that could deliver a different meaning. "It's time for you to get married, Jean."
I frowned at her statement, "I don't want to." I refused and just then, Thomas entered the office; taking a seat beside me.
Ava smiled at us, "Right timing, Thomas." She cleared her throat, "Thomas will be your spouse."
My heart sunk to the deepest part of the ocean. From the corner of my eyes, Thomas was surprised as well about Ava's sudden decision.
"That's insane." Thomas denied, "Forcing us into a marriage won't profit you."
Ava sighed, "Thomas, have I asked you to pay any of my kindness towards you before?"
Thomas shook his head and leaned on his chair.
"This is my only request, Thomas. Marry Jean." Ava tried to convince us, "You two are the most intelligent kids here, and I supposed your child would have the same intelligence as you two. Think this through, Thomas. We still need to find the cure. Remember what your mother said—"
"She wanted me to make her proud." Thomas continued Ava's words.
A look of satisfaction bloomed on Ava's face. "Indeed. If you manage to find the cure through your child, she must be proud of you."
