"𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐒," 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐓 teen could tell it was Alby by the familiar rough voice. The older teen raised a finger to his lips to shush the brunet. Thomas, confused, let out a little noise and finally Alby removed his hand. "Follow me." Thomas watched as Alby walked away and glanced around to see everyone still asleep. He quickly got up and followed the dark-skinned boy to the Maze wall. "It's peaceful, isn't it?" The two continued towards the large concrete wall. "I know it's hard to believe, but it wasn't always this way," The green grass seemed to be brighter in the morning sun and the breeze was just soft enough that when it grazed your skin you didn't shiver. Alby was right, it was peaceful. "We had dark days. We lost a lot of teens to fear," At Alby's words, Thomas couldn't help but stare at the ground as despair washed over him. Everything he had seen so far was happy and cheerful, just your average teens having fun, but with what Alby was saying, Thomas knew that under all the smiles were broken teens just trying to survive. "To panic," The two stopped at the Maze wall and stared back at the Glade where some boys were rising from sleep and wandering around. "But we've come far since then. Established order, made peace."

Thomas nodded. "Yeah. Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you're not like the others," Alby said, facing Thomas with a serious look. "You're curious. But you're one of us now. You need to know what that means," The dark-skinned boy took Thomas' hand in his own and handed him a large knife before pointing to the wall behind the teens. Thomas turned and noticed many names engraved in concrete but some had strikes threw them. The brunet recognised some names such as Alby, Gally, Minho, Filomena, Newt, Jeff, Clint and Chuck while others he didn't yet know.

"What happened to them?" Thomas asked as he pointed at one of the names that had a line through it.

"Like I said..." Alby started ominously. "Dark days, Thomas." Thomas hit the dull end of the knife in his left hand behind he walked over to the wall to carve his name in the concrete.

Alby had left Thomas with the Trackhoes and Gardners to help them with their work. He, Newt and Zart were all working in silence when Filomena made her way over to them.

"Hey," She greeted before sitting down on a log and facing the boys.

"Hi Flo," Zart smiled before continuing with whatever he was doing.

Thomas nodded at the girl before turning back to what he was doing but in his peripheral vision, he noticed that Newt had perked up slightly at the red-haired teen's presence.

"Hey Filomena," Thomas spoke up, as a thought came to his head. "You're the only girl in the Glade, right?"

Filomena glanced around at the other boys who were working around the Glade. "Yeah," She replied half-heartedly.

"Why are there only boys?" Thomas asked even though he didn't expect a proper answer.

"No one really knows," Filomena glared at the stick that she fiddled with in her hand. "For the past three years, the Creators have only sent up boys. Never has there once been a girl, much to my distaste."

"But she's learnt to tolerate us," Newt interjected, still half focused on what he was doing except there was a smile on his face.

"I mean to be fair I was forced to," Filomena said as she turned to face Thomas. "But trust me, pretty much everyone here are friendly guys," Thomas couldn't help but let out a scoff.

"Contrary to popular belief, Gally is an okay person." The brunet turned away from the girl and they settled back into silence.

Thomas continued digging a hole before he broke the silence. "Has anyone tried climbing to the top?"
