The rays of the rising sun shine through the window, casting hues of gold onto various objects of the room. It's still not too bright outside, but light enough that there's no need for the lights to be on.

I wince as I swallow the warm water, the feeling making my chest constrict. It's no surprise that I woke up with a sore throat; the amount of screaming from the previous night was guaranteed to leave me like this.

I rinse out the empty glass, placing it upside down beside the sink. My body jerks slightly as the sleeve of my jumper slips down, exposing my shoulder. It's been getting colder as the end of September approaches. It's not as chilly as it would be in Bordeaux, but the comfort of the warm weather from the summer is completely gone, pushing California into the cool arms of autumn.

I've never had much of a problem with the cold, but nothing compares to the feeling of being able to wear bikini tops and shorts all day long during the summer, or the late night walks to the beach while it's still warm. Autumn also happens to be a beautiful season, so I'm not too upset that summer is over. The red and yellow leaves decorating the floor are always a beautiful sight to come across.

I zip up my jumper about halfway before I bend down to pick up my bag, slinging it over my shoulder as I walk out of the kitchen. I almost bump into Mom as I approach the front door, making both of us take a step back from the fright.

We haven't spoken since Tuesday; I've made no effort to talk to her despite her various attempts. She was partially right; if I had known Evie and Rosa were going to our father's engagement party, I would've screamed at them for deciding to do so. However, I'm still annoyed that she completely disregarded my feelings about the situation. It's a habit she can't seem to stop doing no matter how many times I express my discontent with it.

I give her a small nod as a greeting, quickly strolling past her to get to the door. Her cold hand latches around my wrist before I can lay a finger on the handle, making me sigh lightly.

I turn back to her, raising a brow. A slight feeling of guilt arises in me at her expression; she seems tired, mentally exhausted, likely because of me. It appears that I've managed to frustrate everyone in my life. The raised brow lowers as I stare at her, not wanting to upset her further.

"Tu ne peux pas m'éviter pour toujours," she states, taking her hand off my wrist.

(Translation: You can't avoid me forever.)

"Malheureusement non." The corners of her lips turn up, her body relaxing at my teasing tone. I give her a tight lipped smile. Arguing with her is tiring, and I'll never convince her to see my side, so there's no point in keeping it up anymore. "Evie et Rosa peuvent faire ce qu'ils veulent. Ce n'est pas à moi de les empêcher de le voir s'ils le veulent vraiment. J'essaie juste de les protéger."

(Translation: Unfortunately not.) (Evie and Rosa can do that they want. It's not my place to stop them from seeing him if they really want to. I'm just trying to protect them.)
