When they left the dress shop half an hour later, Anya couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief that she didn't have to see Selené in her wedding dress anymore.

She held the car door for Selené as she glanced down at her phone. There was a text from Trey that she had ignored earlier that said he needed her to take care of something that had come up.

Anya ignored it and climbed into the car behind Selené. She didn't want to think about him right now. She had thought about him enough as she watched Laura lace Selené into her dress.

When she shut the door, there was a long, uncomfortable moment of utter silence. Anya tried to bite her tongue, but she found she couldn't hold herself back.

"You did look beautiful," Anya said. She tried to keep the venom out of her voice, but a bitter edge still snuck through.

"Thanks," Selené said, blinking up at her.

Anya shook her head. "He doesn't deserve you, you know."

Selené's eyes widened, and her mouth parted slightly, like she didn't know what to say. Anya's hand moved over to hers, and she grabbed it with a pitiful sort of desperation.

"And maybe I don't deserve you either, but if I would have been alone with you, Selené—if I could get more time alone with you—"

Anya was cut off by her phone buzzing; she pulled her hand away. Anya yanked her phone from her pocket in frustration and answered it.

"Did you see my text?" Trey asked before she could even speak.

"Yeah. I saw your text. Is it okay if she goes with your sister? Or do you want me to drop her off at her house?"

"Send her with Laura. I don't want her to be alone without eyes on her," he said. Anya swallowed down her anger enough to stay silent. "Cole wants you to help him with something."

Anya felt her entire body tense up. He had to be joking. "And you want me to do it?"

Anya watched Selené shift around in her seat and frown. Anya gave her a glance in return but managed to maintain her composure.

"He's part of my family. Are you saying you don't want to help him?" Trey said.

"I'm not saying no; you know I wouldn't do that. I just don't trust him," she said. "You know he can't stand me."

"It's just one job. He said it wasn't anything crazy," Trey said. "Isn't this what I pay you for anyway?"

Anya leaned forward, rubbing her temple with her finger and thumb.

"Okay," she said. "I'll meet him downtown in a couple hours."

She hung up the phone and put it back in her pocket.

"What was that?" Selené asked.

"Give me a second," Anya said, not looking at her.

She took a breath and pulled open the call door to yell out to Laura. She could tell Selené was getting restless, but she tried to ignore it. Laura stopped in her tracks and turned to run back over to her.
