A week later, preparations for Donald's birthday party were in full swing at the Way mansion. The Ways were meticulous in their guest list, inviting only those deemed worthy of their prestigious circle. High-ranking family members, influential friends, and esteemed members of the community received coveted invitations to Donald's birthday celebration. As the party organizers worked tirelessly to ensure every detail was perfect, the mansion transformed into a scene of opulence and extravagance. Elaborate floral arrangements adorned every surface, while crystal chandeliers cast a soft glow over the proceedings. Meanwhile, in the grand ballroom, the band tuned their instruments, preparing to serenade the guests with lively music and elegant melodies. The aroma of gourmet cuisine filled the air as chefs bustled about in the kitchen.

That morning, the Way family gathered for breakfast in the dining room. The table was adorned with fine china and gleaming silverware. As they sat down to eat, Donna cleared her throat, drawing everyone's attention. "I have an announcement to make," she said. "I've invited Pastor Frank to join us for Donald's birthday celebration tonight." Gerard's heart skipped a beat at the mention of Frank's name, his pulse quickening with anticipation. "That's wonderful, dear," Donald replied. "Pastor is a good friend of ours. It wouldn't be a proper celebration without him." Gerard nodded in agreement, his mind racing with thoughts of seeing Frank later that evening. He took a sip of his coffee and stole a glance at his mother, a silent thank you on his lips. As the family continued their breakfast, Donna turned her attention to Gerard. "You know, Gerard, I think it would be wonderful if you and Pastor Frank became closer friends," she suggested. "He's such a good influence, especially for someone in your position." Gerard forced a smile, nodding in agreement. "Of course, Mother," he replied. "I'll make an effort to spend more time with him."

Donald chimed in. "That's my boy," he said as he reached out to ruffle Gerard's hair. "Pastor Frank's a fine young man. You could learn a thing or two from him." Gerard swallowed hard, little did his parents know, he and Frank were already more than just friends. "Hayley, dear, any news on the pregnancy front?" Donna inquired, turning to Hayley. Hayley's eyes flickered with a hint of discomfort as she shifted in her seat. "Not yet, Mrs Way," she replied. "But we're still trying." Donna's smile faltered slightly, her brow furrowing with concern. "Well, don't lose hope, dear," she said gently, reaching out to pat Hayley's hand reassuringly. "I'm sure it'll happen soon enough." Donald nodded in agreement as he echoed his wife's sentiments. "You two just keep at it," he said. "We'll have a little grandchild running around before you know it." Gerard's discomfort grew with each passing moment, his heart heavy with guilt as he listened to the conversation unfold.

After breakfast, Gerard quietly excused himself from the table and made his way to his study room, a private sanctuary reserved for him and him alone. Closing the door behind him, Gerard took a moment to breathe. The room was filled with familiar comforts, the shelves lined with books and mementos collected over the years. Sinking into the plush armchair by the window, Gerard allowed himself a moment of peace and quiet. With a sigh, Gerard reached for a photo frame on the desk beside him, his fingers tracing the smiling faces of himself and his parents. As he gazed out the window at the world beyond, Gerard knew that he couldn't stay hidden away in his study forever. Sooner or later, he would have to confront the truth of his feelings and the consequences that awaited him. Settling into his study, Gerard positioned himself at his desk and powered up his iPad. With practiced ease, he opened his drawing app. His fingers danced across the screen, sketching out intricate lines and shapes. He was a comic artist and drawing was more than just a hobby for Gerard – it was his passion.
