Jaob's POV

Sara was right- she was so right it frustrated me. It wasn't right what I was doing, and if she hadn't of stopped us I would've made such a mess.

Heading back into the main hall, the music was now more upbeat as a crowd of people bounced up and down on the dance-floor. Stephen and Matthew were standing by the drinks stand as I approached them,

"Hey, where have you been?", Matthew rose an eyebrow taking a sip from his glass,

"I needed some air", moving towards an empty table, we all took a seat.

"Maddy's been going crazy, so good luck with that", Stephen chuckled pressing a cocktail sausage into his mouth,

"Oh god", pressing my chin into my hand, Sara walked passed with Eva as they danced their way onto the dance-floor,

"And where the fuck have you been?", Maddy came from behind slapping me on the shoulders,

"Fuck off you two", she hissed gesturing towards Stephen and Matthew,

"Woah, they can stay", I scoffed watching her as she sat next to me,

"Fine. So?", she crossed her arms over her chest raising her right eyebrow,

"I needed some air", I sighed resting my elbows on the table,

"Tonight is supposed to be our night", shaking her head and narrowing her eyes, she fiddled with her rings,

"Yeah, agreed. But I can't be around you when you're like that", I admitted intertwining my fingers,

"Like what?", her jaw was clenched and she shuffled in her seat,

"Nasty, Maddy. What thrill do you get from dragging people down?", I spoke sternly watching her face soften and her lips purse,

"It's not my fault people can't handle the truth", she murmured as Stephen and Matthew gasped slightly as my temper rose,

"What? Y'know Maddy you can be so bitter sometimes- you're a beautiful and kind girl, I don't understand it one bit", my patience was wearing thin as she rolled her eyes,

"Why are you deflecting? You left me for 20 minutes! I've had a shit day, I nearly failed my SATs because of you, and now you're embarrassing me on prom night! What is wrong with you?", she continued raising her voice slightly,

"Hang on, how are your SATs my fault? Have you not thought it might've been because you skipped classes and spent more time with your friends than at a desk? You didn't even ask me what I got, and I did well- so it seems like the only problem here is with you. And you were with Nora, I didn't leave you!", She shuffled back in her chair slightly lowering her gaze,

"As my partner, I firmly believe that we should support each other in public and correct each other in private", she whispered under her breath before lifting her gaze back to me,

"Okay, well I'm sorry that I embarrassed you. But I stand by what I said, and you're going to become very lonely if you keep blaming everyone else for your problems and be cruel to those that don't deserve it. We're going to college in a couple of months, I suggest you grow up", taking my hand gently, she nodded in agreement.

"I didn't mean what I said, I was just so disappointed earlier and instead of taking responsibility I took it out on you and others. I'm sorry", smiling lightly, she apologised squeezing my hand.

Feeling my heart soften, I was relieved that she accepted and embraced my point of view- I didn't expect her to listen as well as she did. Listening to one another and trusting each others judgement is a vital part of keeping a relationship healthy, and I believe we'd just taken a major step forwards.
