Y/N walked up to the address written on the file. It was an old, unkept apartment complex. Taking the elevator to the seventh floor, Y/N walked out into the hallway. He heard people and banging behind locked doors.

Finally, he made it to the room he was looking for. Y/N took a deep breath. This was it. He brought his hand up and knocked on the door.

Marilyn: Just a second.

The door opened and Y/N found a woman with a similar complexion to his own. She wore baggy clothing and had bags under her eyes. She look tired.

Marilyn: Hey, look, I'm late for work already, alright? We don't need any magazines or whatever

Marilyn: Hey, look, I'm late for work already, alright? We don't need any magazines or whatever. Thanks, though.

Y/N: Oh, I'm not... You probably don't recognize me... but I found my way home.

Y/N held up the compass ball from years ago. Marilyn looked at it with unfamiliarity.

Y/N: Mom. It's me.

The woman finally recognized who he was. Instead of a joyful expression like Y/N had expected, she seemed to frown as if a dark cloud moved above her head.

Marilyn: Oh, God. Is it?

Y/N nodded and tried to hug her. She quickly pushed him away.

Marilyn: Um... Hang on.

From inside, a man shouted out.

Man: Who's at the door?

Marilyn: It's um... It's no one, Travis.

She shut the door behind her as she walked out to talk to Y/N.

Y/N: That wasn't Dad, was it?

Marilyn: No. Listen, um... It's... It's really you, huh?

Y/N: I didn't mean to run away. You know that, right? I let go, but it was by accident.

Marilyn: Yeah, no. I know, yeah. I saw you.

Y/N stood there speechless. She had seen him? Why didn't she come get him, then?

Y/N: What?

Marilyn: I saw you after. So, it was never your fault. Look, I was 17, okay? And my daddy kicked me out. And your dad just decided not to be a part of anything. And I was hurting, and I was screwed up. Look, it's just once I saw you with the police, I realized that they could do a better job taking care of you than I ever will.
