June 3rd
I stare at the ceiling listening to the phone ring as I lay on the bed in our empty room all morning and half of the afternoon.
As the sun starts to dip in the sky the door to the room creaks open. I sit up quickly and spin towards it, my heart leaping. Freya appears in the doorway and I collapse back on the bed. It's not you. There is no hope. My heart cracks further.
Freya's perfume permeates the room. She doesn't speak. I keep my eyes on the ceiling. I don't want her here.
The bed shifts as she sits on it and wraps a hand around mine. I don't look at her. She lays down beside me. I've never known her to be quiet for this long. She rolls onto her side, her gaze penetrating the side of my face. There's no point in trying to ignore her. She's not going anywhere. I roll onto my side and face her, waiting to see what soothing thing she's going to say. What do you say to someone like me? How can anyone have any words for this?
Tears slide from the sides of my eyes and she brushes my hair from my face, looping it behind my ear. Her tears run too. She holds me with her eyes as we silently cry. She doesn't try to brush away her tears or mine. She does the one thing that no-one in my life has ever done. She sits with me in my pain. Has she been crushed this way?
