I think compliments are important because they're out of the blue. You could be walking down the hall and someone says you look cute today. That's so uplifting for someone, especially if they don't normally get complimented. With that one nice thing, you could change that girl's day, and I guarantee you she'll think about that on the bus ride home, all the way until she goes to bed.
Be generous with compliments.
