"What?" I exclaimed, picking myself up off of the floor.

"Friends?" she said hopefully.

Lily POV

I was left in a lapse of momentary silence, realising I had just agreed to be friends with an arrogant, stupid, cute toe-rag. Cute, where did that come from? This was pathetic, I crept upstairs to my room and pulled on my pajamas, ignoring the unmade bed, and creeping back out of the room. I snuck out into the cold corridor, bare feet on the russian carpet. I followed the dark corridor to the stairs leading up to the roof. I crept slowly up them and pretended not to hear the slightest of creaks when I stepped up, and found my way onto the roof where wind was blowing a gale. My hair was blowing around, but I just let it go around and around. Until I felt warm, calloused hands wrap around my shoulders. I literally jumped out of my skin. Until I heard the voice.

"You should get some sleep, Lily."

Of course it was James.

"What are you doing here James?"

"I saw you sneak back out of your room, so I followed."

"Creep much?"

"Hey, you should get some sleep."

"You should stop following me around," I pointed out.

He ignored my comment, however, and sat down next to me.

"Well if you're not going back to your room, I must insist that I stay here with you until you do."

"I can't get to sleep. So I'm not going back to my room."

"Well, there's not much I can do about that. Unless..."

"What?"

"I wonder if the kitchens have a Sleeping Draught. Wanna come with?"

"Yeah, I suppose, if it'll help me sleep."

"Well c'mon, then!"

He grabbed my hand, intertwining our fingers and pulling me along. Butterflies erupted in my stomach, but I ignored it as I ran to keep up with his bounding strides. He was so mischievous. Suddenly we were in the kitchen and he was asking Tom, who was just closing up, about the sleeping draught.

"No, sorry we don't have anything, James."

"Oh, that's alright, never mind."

"Is it for Lily?" he asked, pointing at me with a glass he was drying.

"Yeah," I spoke up. "It's ok, though, James just came up with the idea. We didn't really expect to get anything."

"I might have something to make you sleepy, just wait here for a min."

"K."

I looked over at James, who had a goofy grin on his face that said something like, 'I'm so proud of myself.' He was so stupid. He knew that, though, so there was no point in trying to tell him. Because I was slightly grateful for tonight.

We boarded the trains, receiving stares from many, who had noted that our two had joined. It was just the year seven Gryffindor's now. No more, girls and boys, just seventh year Gryffindor's. We looked down the corridor, and found a compartment, until James and I realised that we had to go to the meeting, as well as Remus. I wasn't exactly trusting, leaving them there in our head's carriage, but we did anyway. There were all (except Remus) of the house leaders waiting for us, in one enlarged cabin. They had all seated themselves according to their houses, which helped James and I out a bit. There were twenty six leaders this year, counting James and myself. There were the Head Boy and Girl, then 6 prefects for each house, two in year 5, two in year 6 and two in year 7.

"Alright, everyone," I said, clapping my hands together. "We need to discuss responsibilities, I need everyone's attention."

"Ahem!" James cleared his throat loudly.

Everyone stopped talking, and James reverting to his old ways, smirked at me.

"Thank you, Potter," I said stiffly. "We need to discuss everyone's responsibilities, or at least reinforce them for the year 6's and 7's. Some of you may have to patrol the corridors of the Hogwarts Express on the remainder of the way to school, and all of the other times we are on this train. We also patrol hallways to ensure that other students are not breaking curfew. You will have to show the first years the way to their dormitories when we get back and watch them when bad weather keeps them indoors over break times. You are also in charge of decorating the hall at Christmas and Easter, times like that."

"Any questions?" James asked. Everyone shook their head silently. "Alright, then. I want the Gryffindor year... 6 prefects to stay behind please. I won't be caught showing favouritism, so that's why you guys are doing the first round of patrols!"

His energy was catchy. But don't ever tell him I said that! Or even thought it. The last thing I need was James getting the idea he had a chance catching me. But he doesn't have a chance catching me anyway, so why was I worried? I was confusing myself. James had dug under the foundations of the gate and was starting to get into my brains. Confusing them further with every step he took.

James POV

Lily looked like she was having an internal battle. What did I do this time? That was the question I would ask myself from now on. I knew I couldn't get over her, I had tried but to no avail. It seemed the world had pitted us against each other, but wanted her to hate me whilst I was scrunched up in agony at the fact I couldn't stop loving her. It was the world's plan, my mother said whenever I mentioned it. 'It's trying to change you for the better, James,' she said, 'The world's tryna change your attitude a bit, and then she'll change,' or she would say; 'James your ego is far to big for this poor girl. You terrorize her at school, and expect her to say yes? I'm going to have to apologise at the end of the year, you know that?'

My mum probably would have to apologise, but just wait and see. Evans would be mine before the end of term.

We followed McGonagall down a narrow passage on the seventh floor, and saw the door to a broom cupboard. Whoa, okay! Getting Evans in a broom cupboard wouldn't be as hard as I thought. Professor McGonagall left us in the room, Lily having already decided our password. It was amazing, literally. There was a large fire, a whole wall just made out of bookshelves, two desks side by side in one corner and numerous large and extremely comfortable looking couches. On the left, there was a circular room with a flat roof where a spiral staircase wrapped around and took us upstairs. Our rooms were on opposite sides and we both went in to investigate. Mine had the usual stone walls and creaky wooden floor, but there were Montrose Magpies posters all over my walls, just like I would put them, with a calendar, marking full moon. My covers were black and white and so were the curtains on the bed. I emerged from my room, still stunned, and caught Lily's stupefied eye.

"I know right?" I said, then cracked a joke, "Getting you in a broom cupboard wasn't as hard as I thought."

She turned away from me concealing the smile that was on her face.

"Evans, wait!"

"Here we go again," she muttered under her breath.

"I just wanna know the password," I lied.

She turned to look at me.

"It's lemur."
