Chapter Three
Emma had been awake for hours. Having fallen asleep so early last night, she was now up at the crack of dawn.
With the little radio in the kitchen on low volume, she cooked pancakes for herself and Abby. She knew Abby would not be awake for a long time yet, but Emma was not staying at home. She had spent all week holed up in the apartment, only leaving to go to work, which was only a few minutes walk and then back home. On this lovely Friday morning, she was going to go shopping, or to the park or somewhere.
Quickly eating and dressing, she put her sneakers on and her headphones in her ears. It was time for a walk.
She hit the pavement and her senses were immediately assaulted by the usual goings on in New York. Pressing play, her playlist began and she broke into a quick, brisk walk. Turning the corner, she was at Central Park West and there was plenty going on here.
Emma loved spending time here and even though she was mostly at home, when she did venture out it was always here. The tree lined paths were so inviting, and this is the one place in Manhattan that she absolutely loved and would miss should she ever leave.
No sooner had she broke into a light jog then her phone began to buzz. Looking down, she did not recognise the number. It was times like this her heart skipped a beat as she wondered if it was Adam.
"Hello?" She answered.
"Hello, Emma? It's Seth from The Harbour Room. I hope it's not too early for you," He sounded as though he was grinning.
Emma slowed down and took a seat on a nearby bench.
"No, far from it." She replied, watching people walking by absentmindedly.
"I would like to offer you the position at The Harbour Room. To begin on Saturday night."
Emma was immediately thrown by the offer.
Tilting her head to the side in confusion she asked, "Excuse me? I thought it was for the Tiger Bar? Remember you said I was too inexperienced for The Harbour Room,"
This guy was not with it. Emma shook her head. Coming from someone who hadn't even read her resume before interviewing her, it was not surprising.
She waited as Seth cleared his throat. "Oh there's been a change of plans,"
"How so?" Emma queried.
"Mr Dean requested you work in The Harbour Room." He replied.
Emma almost dropped the phone. "He did? Why?"
"I have no idea. As soon as you left, he asked me to hire you there. You will be working the dinner his father is hosting on Saturday night. Mr Dean's request, not ours," Seth explained.
Emma scratched her head in shock. "Umm, okay. Well thanks." It was almost a question.
"I need you to be here by three. Dinner begins at seven. There is a lot to do," Seth said.
"Sure thing. See you then." Emma hung up.
She was so confused and excited right now all she could do was pack away her phone, put the music back on and continue with her jog. There was no one she could call and scream down the phone too. Abby would be still asleep and she didn't care to call her parents one bit.
In normal circumstances she would be jumping up and down, but the jog would have to do.
