Chapter Fifteen
"So how did it go?" Bennett asked Emma, as he sidled up beside her.
Emma's body immediately stood to attention as he came within such close contact to her, their knees touching. He took her hand and kissed her knuckles, one at a time, making everything down below clench with desire. He had the right moves, and he already knew just how to turn her on.
"It actually went much better then I expected," Emma tried hard to sound composed and unaffected, but her voice was a complete giveaway. He smelt so good and Emma inhaled deeply, savouring the smell. Bennett smiled up at her, his green eyes twinkling with amusement. The corners of his eyes crinkled just a tiny bit, making him all the more handsome.
"That's good to hear."
"How was your afternoon?" Emma asked.
He put her hand in his lap and rolled his eyes as he rested his head against the seat. "I had meetings all day. They were dull and boring,"
"I'm sorry you had a bad day," She ran her fingers over his, and gave his hand a gentle squeeze. He smiled, a slow, lazy smile. He looked over at her.
"I have a feeling it's going to be better now that you're here,"
His comment insinuated exactly what Emma was hoping for. More. Although it was almost midnight, she was now wide awake, craving him. The anticipation of seeing him had been an adrenalin boost, and she now felt recharged.
Suddenly, his phone began to ring and he let her hand go to pull it out of his back pocket. He frowned when he saw the number.
"Seth?"
Emma's heart and stomach lurched simultaneously at the mention of the name. Guilt brewed in the pit of her stomach and washed over her, a horrible feeling that drowned out all the exquisite ones she had just felt. Should she feel so bad about it? They were not together, not really, not like this. Did it count?
Bennett looked over at her as he spoke, looking afflicted, the same frown still planted on his face. Emma could not bear to look at him, instead turning away to look out of the window.
"Tomorrow night, Friday and Saturday night?" Bennett queried. He was silent for a beat.
"No, don't put her on for any of those shifts, find someone else- Yes, you heard me, I said find someone else."
Emma's curiosity was aroused. Were they talking about her?
He was silent, and still staring out of the window, Emma could only assume that the phone call was over. Slowly, she turned around to see Bennett now looking straight ahead, and he did not look happy.
"Everything ok?" Emma asked. The guilt had begun to ease. If she was right about what she thought was going on, she had no idea how she was going to handle it.
Bennett looked over at her. "If you must know, it was Seth. He asked me if you could work this weekend and I told him you were unavailable,"
If you must know?
Emma closed her eyes in disbelief. "You did what?" When she opened them back up she was prepared to hash this out.
"I told him no, Emma," Bennett too, seemed strangely upset and Emma had no idea why.
"Why did you tell him I couldn't work? I can work, I need the money,"
"I thought we could spend the weekend together, that's all," Bennett was watching her intently, gauging her reaction.
Emma looked down at her hand, still in Bennett's lap. Would everyone now know that she was with him? What would Seth tell them now that Bennett had relieved her of her shifts? As much as she preferred to stay locked away with him and away from all those rude people, she knew she could not do it. She took her hand back.
