A shot in the dark,
A past, lost in space,
And where do I start?
The past and the chase?

Chapter Five
By seven thirty, everyone who was attending tonight's dinner was seated and ready to be served.
The club had been transformed into an even more sophisticated version of itself. Ten tables dressed formally in white tablecloths and linen covered chairs took pride and place. The floral centrepieces alternated with a beautiful candle pieces gave it an understated elegance. Obviously Mrs Dean had helped decorate tonight's event.
Everyone had been waiting with baited breath for the guests to arrive, in particular Mr Bennett Dean himself. It was not everyday apparently that these functions were held here, and tonight was a big deal for all involved, especially the staff.
When Bennett arrived he was immaculately presented in a tux and silver tie, looking even more handsome then he had at first sight. The girls had been beside themselves trying to get his attention. They tried to make small chit chat, offered to take his coat, get his pre dinner drinks and were prepared to wait on him hand and foot, not because it was their job, but because they wanted to be noticed.
Emma stood back the entire time and chose to make herself available to whomever needed her assistance. The last thing she wanted to do or would ever do was hang off a man shamelessly.
When the time came for service to begin,Emma was beside herself with nerves and had no idea how she would serve anybody with a steady hand. This was a far cry from Rock's Deli, where putting together shouted orders and basic sandwich and salad making skills were all that was required. Emma was unsure of herself, just like she always was.
It didn't help that the only person who was being nice to her was Seth. Everyone else, especially the female staff were being downright rude. Seth had even had to speak to a few of them who were giggling in a corner as they poured drinks, looking over at her. It was her first day here and she was already feeling as though she wanted to quit.
Yet there she stood an hour later, with ten other servers and a silver tray in her hand loaded with entrees.
"Okay guys this is how tonight is going to go," Seth began, as he stood in front of the line up.
"There are ten tables here tonight, so it is obviously just a small gathering. Each one of you will be assigned to a table and that is the only table you will be serving food too, in order to avoid any confusion. As for drinks, if you are stopped by someone, just take the order. That's fine."
Everyone nodded, including Emma. That was easy enough to understand.
Seth rattled on the table numbers and assigned each staff to one.
"Emma, you will be serving table number one, Mr and Mrs Dean's table tonight,"
Emma almost dropped her tray. Her nerves could only take so much and now she was being asked to serve the main table?
"The main table? On her first day, Seth come on," One of the waiters complained. Emma was just glad it was not a female staff with the issue.
Seth shrugged. "Special instructions,"
"From who?" The waiter asked.
"Bennett," Seth hissed, and the waiter immediately shut his mouth. Emma's stomach lurched with nervous anxiety.
Her peripheral vision caught almost the entire line up glancing over at her, but she stood and stared straight ahead. She was just as confused as they were.
"Okay so if there are no further questions, you can begin," Seth said, waving his hand out to the floor and everyone began to disperse.
Emma stood back for just a split second as she watched the servers at work. They each went to their designated table and began setting the plates of food down in front of them.
It seemed straightforward enough and Emma walked over to Mr Dean and his parent's table, being extra careful not to so much as even glance in Bennett's direction.
She began of course, at the head of the table and placed the salmon confit in front of Mr Dean Snr. He said not a word and Emma continued. Next came Mrs Dean, a wordly elegant older woman with short blonde hair and way too much jewellery. She was dressed in a stunning black dress and had a fantastic figure. She looked up and smiled at Emma and her green eyes resembled Bennett's. Emma smiled back.
Bennett was not seated beside his parents and was instead at the other end of the table. Emma's heart was racing by the time she reached him and she hoped she would not screw this up.
Taking the small plate, she leaned in and placed it on front of him. In the few moments it took to do that, the chemistry that charged through her made her catch her breath. It took her by surprise. Her entire body stood to attention.
"Thankyou, Emma." Bennett then whispered, as she moved away.
Emma was caught completely off guard, and gave him no response.
Since Bennett was the last person she had served, she made her way to the kitchen. She let out a breath she had not even known she had been holding in.
Seth was there, leaning against the door with his arms folded against his chest. He was sporting a huge grin.
"Did I do okay?" Emma asked, petrified.
"Oh you did just fine, Emma." Seth continued to grin.
"Did Bennett speak to you?" Elise suddenly appeared from behind.
Emma nodded.
Elise looked at Seth, who was still looking at Emma and smirking like he knew a big secret. Elise was not smiling at all. Instead she gave Emma a dirty look and huffed away.
"She's just jealous," Seth said, "Ignore her,"
"Jealous of what?" Emma asked.
"Bennett does not speak to the servers. He certainly does not thank them either,"
Emma did not know what to say.
"Why don't you go see if any drinks need to be replenished." Seth said, and he smiled at her before going back to the kitchen.
Emma did not want to go back out there. She had just managed to get a grip on her nerves and by walking out there again she was going to get all worked up. But it was her job and she had to go do it.
There were a few empty glasses that needed some refills and Bennett's was one of them. Once again she stood close to him as she did with the other guests, but with him the chemistry was almost explosive. She poured his drink slowly and carefully so as not to spill a drop. As she poured she wondered if he could feel this spark, too.
Bennett looked at her the whole time, and his gaze was intense. She felt her face turn red.
About half an hour later after the empty plates had been collected and taken away, main was to be served. Each server was loaded up with chicken and beef dishes and ready to go.
