Chapter Twenty One
Emma opened her eyes, slowly. The sheets she was wrapped up in felt different, not as soft as she was accustomed too. The scent was familiar, but not what she was expecting. Even the mattress felt softer.
What was going on?
She lifted her head, and automatically felt as though she had been hit by a truck. It throbbed, ruthlessly, making her wince. As she tried to lift the rest of her body up, it screamed in protest. Everything ached.
Resigning herself back to lying down, she staring up at the ceiling. That was when it struck her. She was back in her old apartment. In her old bed. It all became much clearer the second she took a proper look around.
Everything was gone. Bennett was gone. She was back here, back where it all began.
The pain renewed itself with a vengeance, seeping inside her and taking full control. She had lost him, hadn't she?
Yes, she had.
As she continued to put together the scrambled pieces of her thoughts, she replayed last nights events.
Dinner had been lovely, the entire family together, chatting excitedly about her upcoming nuptials. Everyone was getting along so well.
Bennett leaving to go "sort" some trouble out at The Harbour Room. How stupid of her to not realize, to not go with him. Maybe, just maybe, she could have stopped Elise and her big, fat, drunken mouth.
After all that, she remembered Bennett. Sitting there at the dining room, shrouded in darkness. Emma quivered just thinking of him there and what he must have been thinking.
The yelling, the crying and the guilt that followed had been painful. Emma turned to her side as she fought back the tears that were building up the more she remembered.
Enough! Her subconscious tore through, angry and annoyed.
Emma closed her eyes and wept. She could not fight this. Her body ached from the unbelievable amount of crying she had done last night, and now, well it was set to hurt even more. The tears and the sorrow just would not cease.
And then, from the depths of her despair, came a small light, a flicker of something else she remembered.
Something good.
Adam.
He was no longer lost out there in the big wide world. He had come back. She had seen him last night. Or had she dreamt that up to deal with the pain of what life was going to be like now that she was alone once again?
Maybe.
Emma felt worse than she had in a long time. Her room was empty, and she was alone. If Adam really had come back, then where was he? Why wasn't he by her side?
"Abby?" She heard herself, but did not even register that she had even spoken. Her throat burned, and her voice was hoarse, dry.
Only a few seconds went by before the door opened and Abby's face peered inside. Big brown eyes, wide and a face filled with worry.
"Emma? You're awake,"
Emma smiled at her and nodded. She watched as Abby entered the room and walked over to her.
Abby's hands were warm as she pressed them up against Emma's cheeks. "Are you okay? You've been passed out for a couple of hours. The doctor said you'd be fine, though."
"The doctor?" Emma asked, shocked.
"Yes, we had a doctor come and make a house visit. We didn't know what else to do,"
