Chapter Thirteen
"Hot date tonight?" Abby asked, as Emma walked out from her room. Abby was at the dining table with countless books spread out in front of her. She had some big exams coming up and was no doubt in a major studying frenzy. She glanced up from her laptop and smiled. "You look great,"
Emma had pulled out all the stops tonight in a bid for Bennett's attention. Although a small part of her knew she had managed to gain some of it already, she wanted to make sure she fit the part that was him. After hours of deliberation, she had dressed in a cream satin baby doll dress with a thin gold belt around her waist, and white pumps. Her curled hair from this morning was softer now and had fallen somewhat with the heat, but it would still do.
Emma blushed and nodded, although she was still a little apprehensive about Abby after last night. She knew Bennett had frightened her, especially if she had left Jake here in the apartment to scope things out. The thought made Emma smile. Abby cared about her and the feeling was nice.
"I'm sorry if we frightened you last night Abby," Emma apologized.
Abby shrugged. "I just thought it was a little odd that he chose to just go and wait in your room, when I was there in the lounge room. How anti social can you get. I wasn't going to hit on him or anything if that's what he thought. But he just had this look on his face." She looked away as she seemed to recall last nights events.
"Look, I know you were worried, but really, it's fine," Emma did not want to go into too much detail about what happened after she had arrived home and found him in her room. It was better if this conversation ended here.
Abby took the hint and turned back to her laptop. "It's your life, Emma. I just want to see you happy, and focusing on someone real." Emma knew exactly what she meant by that.
"Adam is real," Emma found her self spitting out before even having a chance to stop herself. She regretted it almost instantly. Here we go again!
Abby continued to stare at the laptop. "Emma, he hasn't been real in years. The day he returns is the day I change my mind. Now go. If I had Bennett Dean waiting on me, Adam would be ancient history."
Checking her watch, Emma had ten minutes to spare. Rather then wait in the apartment she decided she would wait on the sidewalk. Hearing Abby lecturing her about Adam was the last thing she wanted to hear. It was just too personal, and Abby's opinions were not welcome here. Too be quite honest, nobody's opinions were welcome, ever.
She walked down the stairs of the old apartment block and stood on the steps of the building. She watched as people returned from their evening walks at Central Park with their dogs in tow, and people headed home from work dressed in their work attire.
It had not been ten minutes when she recognised the black Bentley pulling up on the side of the road. He was early, Emma liked that. The butterflies and pounding heart appeared on cue.
It was Bennett who exited the car and walked up to her. He frowned, concerned as he made his way over.
"Why are you waiting out here?" He asked, taking her hand and helping her down the last few steps and over to the car.
Emma smiled, "No reason. Just excited, I guess."
His returning smile was mind blowing. Dressed in black jeans and a black button up collared shirt, he looked sexier then ever. Did anyone get any hotter than this? Emma could not help but wonder.
In the car, Bennett reached over and planted a warm , sweet, lingering kiss unexpectedly on Emma's mouth. Her breath caught at the feel of him, and she reached a hand out to caress his beautiful face.
