bittersweet introduction

I don't really remember much about my parents. I know that I get my heart shaped face and short structure from my mom, and my blond hair and green eyes from my dad. They died an average death. Well, you would say a very, very common death. I was four or five at the time. The only thing I remembered was mom telling me to run.

"Rukia! No matter what happens, run till you find the wall!"

Then I remembered that the beast picked my parents up in its hand, I yelled after my parents, and I fled as fast as my little legs would carry me. That was the last time I saw them.

I eventually found the wall. If it hadn't been for a sharpsighted Garrison troop, I wouldn't be telling you my story.

I grew up,and I was admitted to training.

I had my mind set on joining the scouting regiment, so when I graduated, I joined. I was eighteen at the time. Now I'm twenty.

Today, we are inducting new members. There are only three, but they must be talented; no one gets in without training. We are all in the courtyard, and I'm in the front line. I'm getting a rather nice view of the new inductees.

They were standing on the platform with commander Erwin. Two males, one sprightly female. I could already tell she had abundant energy. The blond guy looked smug, and the shorter guy, who had dark hair which was halfway buzz cut was looking rather bored.

"Introduce yourselves," commander Erwin said.

Shorty spoke First. Could I call him that? I was rather short myself, standing at a staggering five feet. I know, impressive.

"The name's Levi. Don't wear it out."

Levi, huh? He should show more respect.

As if he read my mind, one of our commanding officers towered over Levi, noses almost touching, and yelled, "You should show some more freakin' respect! You're in the scouting corps now!"

The female spoke next. Sure enough, she was an energetic loose cannon.

"I'm Isabelle! It's nice to meet everyone!" She flashed a little smile.

She's confident. I'm starting to like her personality already.

The blond guy spoke last.

"My name's Farlan."

I noticed something about the trio. Shorty carried himself with a confident, commanding air, and it seemed like he took orders from no one. The other two looked upon him with admiration.

He was their leader.

I had heard it through the grapevine earlier that these three were from the underground. I had also heard that, that information was confidential. I kept the rumor to myself. I certainly didn't want to get in trouble for discussing confidential information with a squad member, especially one that did not need to know.

As I look at them, I think, we've got a long way to go.

Levi's point of view

Stop staring at me, you filthy pigs.

"Levi! I can't believe we made it to the surface! And Bro is getting the medical attention he needs!" Isabelle squealed.

That's the only reason why we were here. A dear friend of mine, someone else I consider family, he needed medical attention. His legs gave out. Also, we didn't want to shrivel away in everyone else's garbage.

That's underground life for you. The life that I was born into. I had no one to raise me. My mother died shortly after I turned five, and my father was just one of her paying customers. Isabelle and Farlan were my only family.

The only reason why we survived to grow into adults is that we ran a black market. We stole all that we could to try and make some money.

It was a nasty place in which one could live. And yes, my dear readers, is one of the reasons I'm a clean freak. The other reason is that it's easier to be a thief when you don't leave a trail. I guess that years of survival wore off on me, not to mention that risky operation that I had to perform on myself with dirty equipment that almost cost me my life because I had no other option.

Then some stranger appeared in the underground one day and gave us jobs. He even supplied the 3DMGs. Then we had to get caught by the survey corps.

My cheek was still bruised where that one guy shoved my head into a puddle. Didn't he know that there was concrete under all that water?

Farlan and Isabelle were adjusting their jackets. I really didn't blame them, the material was itchy.

I felt like a prisoner on the executioners block, and all those people were there to watch me die.

And it felt ridiculous when we had to introduce ourselves.

Yes, Sensei, I thought bitterly.

"Hey, Levi." Farlan poked me in the side. When I didn't immediately look at him, he poked me again. And again.

You little jerk! Keep it up!

"What?" I hissed.

"Take a look at the blond in the front row. She is stacked. I want to get to know her." Farlan wiggled his eyebrows.

Morons. I am surrounded by morons.

I thought as we prepared to go on to training, we've got a long way to go.

If you watched the YouTube video, good. I mean, Levi Smiles for once!!!
