Death. Carnage. That was all we had accomplished on our latest mission. Ilise was MIA. So far year 845 has been a failure. Levi and I had been together for nearly five years now, and with all these titan attacks, we haven't really had the time to sit down and plan out our wedding, much less get any sleep.
It seemed that everyone had bandages on their bodies. I had some gauze wrapped around my right thigh, where someone's 3DMG had malfunctioned and the hook went through my leg. I'm pretty sure I had a bruise covering my entire thigh. Levi had gauze wrapped around his wrists, only because he had sprained them breaking his fall when his horse threw him off. The worst of the injuries? Those people didn't make it back alive.
The townspeople were gathered in the Shiganshina district, watching as we returned.
"It's Levi Heichou!"
"There's Lieutenant Rukia!"
"Commander Erwin and the survey Corps!"
"Is my son come home?"
"There aren't as many now as there was when they left. Something went wrong."
" Our taxes are going to fattening up the Titans! The survey corps is useless!"
I could only watch the crowd as we passed by in our tattered uniforms, keeping my emotions in check. If I had known that the outside world was this hellish, I would have never joined the military.
Deja vu hit me. Standing on a soapbox was a boy with turquoise eyes and brown hair watching excitedly as we passed.
Don't tell me he wants to join the corps? If only these children knew the terrors of our world. Bedtime stories of the corps were nothing compared to the harsh reality.
Then it hit me. It was the same boy from Christmas. And the same girl was with him, only her hair was slightly longer. He had a wood carrier on his back, as did the girl.
Time skip brought to you by what was left of Moses
I was sitting on the kitchen counter wearing shorts in mine and Levi's cabin as he rubbed some healing salve into the wound on my leg. I whimpered as his fingers ever so gently glided across my abraised skin. My leg was a deep shade of purple, almost black. I bit down on the cloth that I had stuffed into my mouth to keep from screaming. My vision blurred.
"I know, it hurts like a mother, but you will feel better the more we clean out the wound. We don't want to chance infection setting in."
I focused on Levi's voice.
He began to wrap some clean gauze around my thigh, and fresh blood stained the cloth fibers.
"It's only bleeding a little. That's good. It's almost scabbed over."
Knock, knock.
"It's open," I called out.
Hanji and Erwin came into the cabin.
"Hey Levi, Rukia. We are just going around to check on everyone. How's your leg, Rukia?" Hanji asked.
"Better than yesterday," I admitted.
"I know your leg has to have a nasty bruise," Hanji commented. "Never had I heard her scream in that kind of agony, even when Erwin accidentally broke her pelvic bone. They were training, and he aimed a kick a bit too low and put a bit too much pressure behind the kick."
"Quit upsetting Levi, " I said.
Levi looked appalled. "You scream over 3DMG hooks going through your thigh, but keep calm when someone breaks your pelvis?" He cringed at the thought.
"Who wants some coffee?" Levi asked, changing the subject.
"You rascal," I teased. "You know I can't resist coffee."
"Sure, I'll have a cup, " Hanji and Erwin said.
"You need some caffeine," I said, noting the dark circles under his eyes.
Levi walked over and brewed a pot. He poured some coffee into two mugs. He handed me my mug, and got the coffee creamer out of the fridge. He sat it next to the sugar dish which was a few inches away from where I still sat. I pulled the silverware drawer open and pulled out some spoons. Levi held his mug by the top and sipped at his coffee, which was straight black. Hanji and Erwin drank their coffee straight black, too.
I ladled some sugar into my mug after pouring in liquid creamer. Levi watched how much sugar I had put in. He cocked a brow, and said, "You like your cream and sugar with a hint of coffee, huh?"
"Shut up," I said while grinning in embarrassment. "You have your preferences, and I have mine." I stirred the mixture, and the spoon clinked shrilly against the sides of the mug. I sipped at my coffee, and sighed. "That hit the spot. I'm telling you, coffee can perform miracles." The pain in my leg was soon forgotten as I finished my coffee.
"The coffee was amazing. What's the secret for perfect coffee?" I asked Levi.
He smirked.
"One tablespoon of coffee grounds for each person in the room, one more for the pot, time, patience, and slipping a dose of ibuprofen into the bottom of your mug."
Hanji bust out laughing, spewing her coffee.
Levi only glared. "You made the mess. You clean it up."
My eyelids grew heavy, and I started to nod off.
Hanji grabbed a couple of paper towels and started cleaning as Levi scooped me up into his arms bridal style, being careful with my leg, and carried me into the bedroom. He laid me down on the memory foam mattress, and pulled the comforter up to my chin.
"I love you," I mumbled.
He brushed his lips across mine. "You too, princess."
Then I blacked out.
I woke up to a loud rumbling sound, like the sound of thunder outside of my window. I sat up quickly and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, and looked out the window. The sky was clear, all except a pillar of white smoke rising from wall Maria.
Did a cannon go off?
I limped out of bed and toward the meeting room, regardless of my attire of shorts and a tank top. Erwin was fastening the straps on his legs as fast as he could.
"Erwin, what is going on!?"
Hanji had fear written across her face. "Wall Maria has fallen at the hands of the Titans. The MP's have ordered an immediate citizen evac, and for all regiments to send out soldiers. Of course, you and the others with major abrasions and other wounds will not be sent out." She was strapping on her 3DMG as she said this.
I limped as fast as my injured leg would take me, hunting down Levi. I found him in the supply room, fastening his cloak over his uniform. I all but tackled him, and he held me as tightly as I held him. He ran his hands through my hair, and I didn't want to let him go.
I followed him out to the stables. He swung himself onto the back of a magnificent black Arabian stallion. I grabbed his arm. "You had better return to me." He leaned down and kissed me.
"You know I will. I love you too much."
I kissed him, leaving the impression that I was afraid to let him go. He would make it out, though. He was a warrior.
He kissed me to leave a lasting impression that I had nothing to worry about. He had the strength of two entire brigades. He leaned back, cupping my jaw. He then reared his horse and took off.
