Just as their guide had described, there was a short walk to a barely used road, leading them into a village-like town. Street venders lined the roads and sidewalks next to cute shops and small family-run restaurants.
"By the time we leave, we need to have tried everything." Xael commented in awe.
"Agreed." Lavi chimed.
"Seriously, this is awesome. There's so much to choose from!" Zion added, looking just as dazzled as the other girl.
"I just want food..." Kanda grumbled.
"There's no soba here." Lavi sung teasingly. "You're going to have to expand that food palette of yours."
"Soba isn't the only thing I eat." He snapped.
"Yes it is." Zion commented.
He clicked his tongue. "Aren't you supposed to be on my side?"
"It's not a 'choosing sides' kind of thing." The brunette answered.
"Whatever." He scoffed.
Scaling the village, Xael pointed to a well-lit, heavily populated restaurant. "That place looks popular. We should try there."
"Sounds like a good idea." Zion agreed as Lavi nodded.
Thus, the four were seated at a table on the outdoor patio as they eagerly looked through their menus, which luckily had an English translation.
But they didn't get nearly enough time to settle down before a gut-wrenching, blood-curdling scream pierced the lively village.
Instinctively, the four Exorcists jumped to their feet, knocking over a few chairs in the process. The people of the village fell silent, every sound that filled the air was quieted.
Until a woman frantically ran past the restaurant, screaming "Demons!" on the top of her lungs.
The screaming began again, and this time, nearly all the villagers hurried to find shelter in a chaotic panic. Lavi turned to Xael with a smirk, saying, "Welcome to your first mission."
The girl swallowed nervously, but nonetheless hurried after the other three more experienced fighters in the direction opposite of where everyone else was running.
Surely enough, there was a swarm of gross-looking, terrifying demons floating over the hills, directly towards the village. "Remember our strategy." Zion advised.
"We got your back." Lavi encouraged before facing Xael. "Let's go."
The darker-haired girl nodded and jogged away from Kanda and Zion with Lavi, towards higher ground. Once they reached a good spot, they knelt in the brush, keeping an eye on the sword-bearers.
"Are you nervous?" The red-haired boy asked warmly.
"No." Xael answered quickly, pulling her Innocence from her boot and chanting, "Dubbiena, Arcus." The small handle stretched into a four foot long, staff-like bow. Lavi assumed this was the partially activated state that the girl had described when she explained her Innocence.
He released a sigh. "That sounds like a lie."
"How?"
"Because it's normal to be nervous on your first mission. I'm more concerned if you actually aren't." He then shrugged. "Even if you are nervous, you've got me to protect you." He beamed cheekily.
She elbowed him in his ribs. "Don't act like you're all high-and-mighty." She huffed.
"I wasn't." He defended.
