"What the Hell do you think you're doing?" The old Bookman growled. "I'm sure you are very aware of the rules."
"I am." Lavi swallowed, sitting on the sofa with a straight back and low head. Xael sat just as stiffly as him, not daring to meet the tiny elder in the eye. He was almost trembling.
The girl grabbed his hand and squeezed it, assuring him that she was going to be with him through thick and thin.
"Then what?!" The Bookman spat. "Are you so head-over-heals in love that you think you can just screw the rules and destroy our clan?"
"I'm not that stupid." The red-haired boy returned bitterly.
"Well, you are stupid enough to fall for a girl who probably won't put up with you for another three months."
"That's not true!" Xael protested.
"Screw everything. It is not allowed and that is final." He bellowed. "And clingy brats would ruin the Bookman clan." He glared at the girl, targeting her directly.
Lavi stood with a stern frown. He positioned himself between the old man and the girl. "Don't you dare target her."
"Who are you to tell me what to do, damn brat?" Bookman growled. "You broke the rules in the first place."
"Sometimes you can't control how you feel."
"That has nothing to do with this. Get over yourself."
"I don't want to freaking hide anymore. I don't want to stay in this 'never trust anyone, never have friends, never love' place. If that means that I have to stop training to be a Bookman, then so be it."
The Bookman slapped Lavi across the face, causing blood to trickle down his lip.
Xael jumped to her feet and grabbed onto the tall boy's arm.
"You both are damn morons." The old man accused.
"You're the damn moron for not accepting that things change. Feelings change. And some of those things can't be controlled." The red-haired young man declared. "And I'm freaking tired of keeping it hidden. Get over yourself." He grabbed the eye-patch that he wore and yanked it off. "I love Xael. That's final."
"Nonsense." The Bookman huffed. "At this point, quitting is not an option. You know too much. You would destroy the clan. Being with her is no option either."
"It's not gonna change."
The old man scoffed. Then, he started shouting at Lavi, most likely scolding and insulting him. However, it was in a language Xael couldn't understand. Yet, Lavi must have understood it perfectly as he seemed to argue just as passionately as the Bookman was angry.
The argument grew volatile, even explosive as both men were furiously trying to prove their points and claim victory over the other.
Xael felt insecure and like she wanted to burst into tears. She wanted to stop the argument. She wanted to end the debate. She knew what she could do to stop them, but it was the last thing she wanted to do. She clutched the Pounamu pendant around her neck. It was supposed to mean protection and a strengthened bond.
They were supposed to be unbreakable.
But the Bookman was getting close to breaking Lavi. She watched as her companion seemed to slowly shrink back in fear and worry. He slowly stopped retorting the old man's accusations and was becoming more defensive rather than offensive.
