Zion slowly woke from the alluring smell of fresh coffee. The space beside her was still warm from where her beloved had been.
She shuffled slightly and a weight pressed down on the bed next to her. "Good morning." The familiar low voice whispered.
She pretended to be asleep, carefully hiding the silly grin on her lips.
Kanda chuckled. "I know you're awake."
"Aw, man." She whined and slowly opened her hazel eyes. "How'd you know?"
He gave her a short kiss and looked her in the eyes. "You're completely still when you sleep."
"Am I?" She giggled. "Looks like you know more about me than I know about myself."
"I'm pretty sure it works the other way around, too."
"Probably." She sat up and he gave her a warm mug of coffee.
He turned the mug around in her hands to show the printed design on it, reading in fancy purple letters, 'Birthday Girl.'
The butterflies fluttered in her stomach. "I forgot that it was my birthday..." She admitted quietly and then looked at his metallic gaze. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me, yet. There's still the rest of the day to get through."
"Oh?"
"Yeah. So, get ready 'cause we're gonna go out."
"Where are we going?" She blinked, knowing that Kanda wasn't particularly the kind of guy to 'go out.'
"Just 'out.'"
"How do I know what I'm supposed to wear if I don't know where I'm going?"
He scoffed jokingly. "Sorry to disappoint, but we don't really have a specific 'where,' but it's more like we're just going out and spending time together."
"That is definitely not disappointing." She stood and approached him, then rolled onto her toes. She gave him a peck on the lips then left to get ready.
The day was just as she had hoped. She wore a loose, white winter dress and boots, and was overjoyed by the mere fact that she didn't have to wear her uniform for a day. They did meaningless things and walked around a part of the town they hadn't gotten to see before. They talked and laughed and enjoyed being in each other's company.
Kanda had his hand constantly in hers. Even though his words were limited, she felt his love for her. Him being with her and going out of his way to show her his compassion was all she needed to be confident in their relationship.
They spent hours out in the town. They ate out for lunch and got ice cream before walking through a green park, with trees and bushes adorning buds of flowers that had yet to bloom. It was still chilly, but spring had just begun.
Later in the afternoon they returned to the Headquarters and planned for a casual evening together. But instead if going directly to Kanda's room, he led her to the cafeteria. In his own way, he seemed excited, almost anxious.
And rightfully so as he opened the door for her and tons of people jumped and screamed, "Happy Birthday!"
Zion felt her heart stop beating for a moment as she was overwhelmed with surprise. Then, she faced Kanda and asked, "Did you do this?"
"With help from Lenalee." He admitted.
"I love you." She sang and kissed him. "Thank you."
"I'm glad you're happy." He grinned gently and handed her a glass of champagne. "Don't eat or drink too much 'cause we still have plans after."
