"Erik, I don't care."

He stopped mid-sentence, glaring at me. "Are you joking? Do you know how much shit I listen to you whine about? Am I rude about it? No!"

I rolled my eyes. "You laughed when I told you that Thayer died."

"That's different."

"How is that-"

"Hey guys!" Sarah, and all over her enthusiasm, joined us then. Erik gave me one last glare before smiling at her.

"Hey, where have you been?"

"That lunch line was ridiculous! I've been waiting for ten minutes for some pizza that isn't even that good!" She rolled her eyes. "Anyway, what were you guys talking about?"

Erik's glare was back. "I was talking about Mr. Green. He gave me a detention today that I clearly didn't deserve, and so I said-"

"Erik, I don't care."

I choked on my water as laughter erupted in my throat. The look on Erik's face as he looked at a smug Sarah. Priceless.

"Wow," he shook his head in disbelief. "Alright, I see how it is."

"You're just not that interesting," I smiled. "You'll get over it."

Sarah's laughter joined mine.

Sarah sobered up before I did. "Farrah, did you hear about Thayer?"

My laughter stopped instantly. "No, what?"

Her voice lowered, and her gossiping voice came out. "He's not coming back to school."

I rolled my eyes. "Sarah, that's ridiculous. We graduate in two months. He has to come back."

"That's not what I heard," she whispered. "I heard that his mom came in and made a deal with the school board. They've made a sort of homeschooling deal. It's for the best, I guess. With the accident, I don't think Thayer will graduate if he doesn't do this."

Erik and I made eye contact. We were one of the few that knew what happened to Thayer was no car accident.

"So, how bad was the car accident?" Erik asked, playing along.

Sarah's eyes widened in disbelief. "You haven't heard?" Erik shook his head. "Thayer's whole car was practically wrapped around a tree when they found him. Had to pry him out of the driver's seat and rush him into emergency surgery immediately. Punctured lung, or something like that. It's and miracle that he is still alive!"

Thayer, I forgive you! Please, just wake up! You can't die! You can't leave me!

I put down my pizza, my appetite suddenly gone. "Yeah, a miracle."

"I heard that he can barely even walk!" She sighed. "It's sad, how one wrong decision can destroy your life forever."

"What is a girl as gorgeous as yourself doing standing alone?"

I stared into his eyes confidently. "I haven't found anyone worth my time yet."

A sly grin slipped onto his lips. "Well hopefully you will deem me worthy by the end of the night."

"We'll see." He took my hand gently into his. "I'm Farrah."

"It's lovely to meet you," He kissed my knuckles gently. "I'm Drake."
