Chapter 16

Gabrielle

She blamed her brother for everything. If Greg hadn’t ordered her to go swimming with him, maybe she’d still be tossing and turning in her bed trying to find a solution to save King Taiven. Actually, if Greg had even bothered to tell her the moment he’d turned into a merman for the first time, it would have saved them both a lot of trouble.

Exactly how long had they been waiting in an underwater cell beneath the castle? Hours? Days? To Gabrielle it seemed to be going on forever even though Greg insisted it was merely just a few hours.

“How long do you think they’ll keep us here?” Gabrielle asked him, as she swam from one end of their cell to another. She felt claustrophobic, even though that it was completely ridiculous considering that the ocean had the biggest space on earth.

Gregory was casually leaning against the bamboo bars of their prison, for some reason seeming calm and collected. “I don’t know.” He responded. “They can’t keep us here forever; the queen will want some answers.”

“About what?!” Gabrielle hurried to responded, still moving to keep herself busy and less panicked.

“About the Deep. About us.” Her brother responded, leaning his back against the bamboo so that he could watch her swim. “I don’t think we should answer though, the last thing we need to get into more trouble.”

Gabrielle was starting to get tired, but she still continued to swim. “But…” She began panting. “Isn’t this the Upper Kingdom?” She asked. “Doesn’t that mean that the queen is Taiven’s wife? She could help us, help him.”

“Gabby, you don’t think that if she wanted to save the King she would have done it a long time ago?” Greg immediately shot back. He had a point, she silently admitted to herself. Why hadn’t this queen saved Taiven yet? If she wasn’t able to do it, why would Gabrielle be able to? “So we don’t say anything.” Greg continued on, clueless to what was going on inside of her head. “From what I’ve heard she’s rather soft, so I don’t think she’ll want to kill us.”

Gabrielle gulped. No one ever said anything about dying. “But she’s one of the good guys!” Gabrielle protested. “Why wouldn’t she want to help us?!”

That’s when Greg snapped. He swam towards her, grabbed her arm to bring Gabrielle to a stop and then stared at her right into the eyes. “Because Gabby, we’re the bad guys. We’re creatures of the Deep; cold hearted fish that have wanted the Upper Kingdom to be destroyed for millions of years. The queen can’t help us, because she won’t be able to trust us; so why should we trust her?”

Gabrielle was going to answer, when suddenly voices seemed to be approaching their cell. When she looked passed her cell, she saw five guards that were swimming towards them, and they did not look happy. Greg kept a firm hold on Gabrielle’s arm to protect her if anything went wrong. One of the guards opened the cell door and the other four swam in, making sure to block the exit so that they wouldn’t try to escape.

“Her Majesty Queen Tarabelle Johansson the First now wishes to interrogate you both.” One of the guards said to them.

“You can tell her Majesty that my sister and I do not wish to speak with her.” Greg spat out rather rudely.
