Chapter Thirteen
His hands tightened around her neck, as she struggled for every breath.
He was on top of her, smothering her, all over her.
The harder she struggled, the weaker she became,
He was everywhere, everwhere.
His hands tightened even more.
“You want to leave me, don’t you? You want him, you want to be with him,”
Adam’s voice was so distant, even though he was so close.
The darkness began to close in, as her breathing grew more shallow.
He was going to kill her.
As the darkness crept up, threatening to take it’s hold, she heard him one last time.
“I’m nothing without you. I’ll be lost out there,”
Consumed by the darkness, she allowed herself to succumb to it.

Emma woke up gasping for air, her body shaking and drenched in sweat. She drew in her breath in loud gasps, her cries escaping. Her hands were at her throat, clawing wildly.
“Emma, wake up! Emma, please!”
Emma looked around, her eyes unseeing. When they finally settled on her best friend, Abby, she began to realise where she was and what was happening.
It was a nightmare.
Abby’s arms tentatively reached out to hold her, and Emma fell into them, crying uncontrollably.
“It’s okay, Emma, he’s gone now. He can’t hurt you anymore.” Abby’s voice was soothing, a beautiful, mesmerising voice of hope and reassurance.
Emma’s body was wracked with her sobs, as she tried hard to control herself. She shook, her body out of her control, as she tried desperately to adjust to her surroundings.
Adam was gone.
The thought hurt, pierced her heart, and she didn't even understand it. But she understood one thing, and that was she had to let this go.
It was a promise she had to keep to herself.
She could not let him hurt her again.
It was a promise she had to stand by.
