Mitch

Today's the day.

Today is the day that will change my life forever.

I run down to the kitchen.

Wow, excited?

Yes.

My mom smiles and grabs her keys. Let's go get breakfast.

I nod and grab my jacket.

We go out to the car and start driving.

I text Scott.

Mitchie: I'm not coming to school today. Come to my house later.

I get a text back a few minutes later.

Scottie: okay :( are you okay?

Mitchie: just going to the doctor 😉

Scottie: omg!! Okay, I'll be over later

I smile and put my phone away.

We pull into the Chick Fil A drive-thru.

I sign the number that I want to my mom.

Soon I'll be able to talk at drive-thru's.

We get our food and start the drive to the doctor.

We get to the doctor and I wait anxiously in the waiting room.

After a few minutes we're led into a room with a bunch of medical instruments.

My mom has the biggest smile on her face.

We wait a few minutes for the doctor and he finally walks in.

Hello! How are we today?

Excited.

Well, let's get started.

**

I constantly jiggle my leg as I wait for the clock to strike 2:55.

The teacher gets our attention.

"Our annual Singing Supper will be February 25th. The theme this year will be holidays. If you can't find a holiday, pick a song and I will help you match it to a holiday. I'm passing out applications now."

I take two applications just in case I lose one of them, which is very possible.

When we're dismissed, I run outside and wait for my mom to pick me up.

I jump in the car. "Can we go see Mitch?"

She laughs. "No, "Hi, mom"?"

"Hi, mom. Can we go see Mitch?"

"Sure, Nel told me that he just got home."

I check my messages to see that he had messaged me earlier.

Mitchie: come over after school!!!

We get to Mitch's house and I run inside.

I bust through his front door and see him sitting on the couch.

He turns his head towards me.

"Mitch?"

**

"Mitch?"

My eyes widen as I... hear my mom's voice?

I turn my head to see her with tears in her eyes.

"Muh- Ma- Mom...?"

She bursts into tears and wraps me in a hug.

I start crying into her shoulder.

After our moment we sit back down.

"Can you hear alright? I'm going to adjust some things..."

He asks me a bunch of questions before we leave.

I hold my mom's hand as we go outside.

I'm a little scared of the sounds and stuff, but I guess I'll get used to it.

My mom starts the car and I jump at the sound of the radio.

Music?

My mom nods. "This is music. Good job."

I smile as I listen to the wonderful noise coming out of the radio.

I wonder if Scott likes music.

We get home and I sit on the couch, trying to take everything in.

I know I don't hear the same as normal people, but I'm sure it's close.

The door suddenly busts open. "Mitch?"

I turn my head towards him.

Connie walks in behind him and shuts the door.

Scott sits beside me.

A huge smile spreads across my face. "He- hello, S...Scott...?"

He hugs me tightly.

"Hello, Mitch."

We stay there for a second until he pulls away.

"Do you know a lot of words?" Scott asks.

I nod, "I can r- read lips." I say slowly.

Talking is weird.

"I'll help you learn."

"Th- thank... you...?"

"Good job!"

Dinner tonight with Scott? My mom asks.

"Yes."

We go up into my room to hang out until dinner.

Choir? I sign.

Scott nods.

Teach me to sing.
