After taking a shower and getting dressed, Y/N headed downstairs and this time, instead of sitting next to Miss Peregrine, she made her way to the seat beside Jacob's and made herself comfortable.
Everyone else arrived a few moments later, including Jacob who had a surprised look on his face.
"Not avoiding me this time?" He asks, smirking.
"Nothing could keep me away." Y/N smiles.
Jacob ended up smiling and blushing nervously for the rest of the meal.
Emma, who was sat on the other side of Jacob, was observing Y/N and Jacob chatting and smiling shortly after breakfast.
Y/N offered Miss Peregrine that she'd do the dishes, mostly because she usually had nothing to do after breakfast except go outside for walks, or play with Enoch and his dolls.
She gathered up all the dishes and headed to the sink to place them. Emma was already there washing the pots when she arrived, so Y/N started to wash the plates on the other side of the sink.
"Y/N," Emma calls softly, her eyes focused on the gray pot she was holding. "Do you like Jake?"
She gulped nervously. She didn't know why, though. "No."
"Really? Okay, you guys talk a lot."
"So talking to a guy immediately means I like them?" Y/N answers with a laugh. "That's ridiculous, Emma. He's yours, remember?"
"I guess..." Emma replies hesitantly. She seemed unsure.
"What's wrong?"
"It's just that Jake doesn't seem so interested anymore. He always avoids the topic, you know what I mean? It's like he doesn't love me anymore." She says sadly, trying to hold back her tears.
"Emma," Y/N's eyes widened at this. She didn't know what was happening between Jacob and Emma, but whatever it was that they had, it was gone now. "I'm sorry about that,"
"It's not your fault, Y/N."
Y/N stayed silent after that. After doing the dishes, she excused herself outside to look for Jacob. She found him moments later, he was on the playground helping Claire get on the other side of the seesaw.
"Jake!" She called, and his head immediately turns to her direction.
"Hi Y/N." Jacob smiles as he placed Claire on the seesaw and moved closer to her.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Do you still have feelings for Emma?" She asks, looking into his bright blue eyes. Jacob's eyebrows furrowed at her question and he started to walk away, but her hand grips on his shirt.
"I asked you something, Jake." Y/N repeats herself, hoping that she'd get an answer.
"I don't anymore." He replies firmly.
"Why?" She couldn't explain how sad she was for her best friend. The person that she loved the most didn't reciprocate what she felt for him anymore.
"There's someone else, Y/N."
"Oh." Y/N wondered how hard it would be for Emma if she heard their conversation. As much as she wanted to tell her, Y/N didn't want to hurt her friend's feelings.
So she kept that secret. For a day, for two days, for a week.
And in that week, Y/N found herself falling for Jacob harder. She realized that the only person that made her happy was him-the cute 16-year-old whose awkwardness around her caused butterflies to erupt in her stomach.
You're ridiculous, don't fall for him. Emma loves him.
Y/N reminded herself that everyday, but she couldn't help it. The way his eyes would sparkle, the way he smiled and laughed, and the best of all, how he treated her.
He was so kind and caring to her. Y/N really felt like he was worth somebody loving.
One night, as they were sat on the sofa, laughing about a story Jacob had told about the peculiars, Y/N decided to ask him something.
"Jake?" She looks at him, her expression suddenly changing.
"Yeah?" He smiles.
"Who is that someone you loved?"
Jacob was confused at first, but he then realized she was referring to the conversation they had about a week and a half ago.
"It doesn't matter," He replies, trying to avoid the topic.
Y/N stayed silent.
Jacob looked into her purple eyes. No matter how many times he'd saw them, he was just as mesmerized as the first time he saw her. He leaned in closer until their noses were only half an inch away.
Suddenly a bunch of footsteps were coming and they backed away from each other.
"What are you two doing?" Enoch asks even though he knew they were going to kiss.
"We were just talking-"
"Yeah, right, Jake." He says mockingly, moving closer to the brown-haired boy. He grabs him by the collar and lifts him up. "Just talking?"
"Enoch! Stop it!" Y/N yells as she stood up and tried to get Enoch's grip off of Jacob. "Why are you so against Jake? Why can't you leave him alone?" She pleads, looking at him straight in the eye. No matter how bubbly her personality was or how elegant she looked, her stare could shoot daggers.
Enoch looked at her as his expression softened. He dropped Jake on the floor.
"Because I really like you, Y/N, and I can't stand seeing you with someone else!"
Y/N's jaw dropped. She didn't think that he felt that for her. And it honestly broke her heart because she knew that she'd never be able to reciprocate those feelings for Enoch. Y/N loved Jacob, and no one else.
"Enoch..." She says, looking into his eyes sadly.
"And I know, Y/N. You don't have to say it. You love someone else and that someone clearly isn't me." Enoch stated, tears brimming his eyes as he refused to look at her. "So just save it." He walks out of the room and rushes upstairs.
Y/N walks out of the house, making her wings appear from behind as she flew up to the roof and started crying. Jacob tried to run after her, but he failed, resulting in him taking the stairs and exiting from his bedroom window. He found Y/N there, her legs curled up to her chest as she let out quiet sobs.
Guessing that Jacob was sat beside her, she looled up. "I hurt his feelings, Jake." She cried.
"Y/N." He started, holding her chin up and looking into her gray eyes. "It's not your fault, okay? It's not your fault that you're irresistible and just so beautiful."
"What?" She asks dumbfounded.
Jacob ignored her question and continued without any sign of hesitation. "You're so kind, and caring to every single one of the peculiars. You treat everyone as equally as possible. And don't even get me started on your eyes; they're so mesmerizing and I always find myself immersing myself into them-"
"Jake." She ends his rambling and snaps him back to reality. Jacob blushes. "This is all very flattering but-just, I, nevermind."
Y/N stares at Jacob. His dimly lit figure under the moonlight looked stunning, and he thought she did too.
He started to lean in for the second time but Y/N shakes her head and stands up.
"I can't do this." She says sadly and flies downward to the ground, only to run back inside.
