--Bowen's Point of View--

I woke up to the sound of my alarm going off.

Bleep, bleep, bleep

I was up in an instant, the energy of today pushing me to move. I had grabbed clothes to wear today last night. A pair of jeans and a t-shirt that I had from Charleston, South Carolina. I ran out in the hallway, clothes in hand, to get a shower before Saige did.

She walked out in the hallway right as I did, the same goal in mind.

"I call it," I said.

"Nope." She bolted to the bathroom and closed the door.

"You have ten minutes," I said through the door.

"Ok!" I walked back to my room, putting the clothes on my bed and sitting down in a beanbag that I had put in here a few years back. I grabbed my phone from the stand, seeing it was about 6:15. My bible verse was going to pop up in three...two...ping.

There it was.

Pslam 23:4 "Even thought I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

It never fails to give me a verse I need.

I heard the shower cut off. I waited a minute and then got my clothes back together and went back to the bathroom. Saige was walking out, towel wrapped around her hair and some jeans and a "Ya'll need Jesus" shirt. I laughed at the shirt and she smiled. I walked into the bath room, quickly getting in the shower. It only took me about ten minutes to get showered, tried off, and clothes put on.

Saige was standing at the stairs, waiting for me.

"Are mom and Jimmy ready," I asked.

She looked down the stairs, "Mom is still getting ready and Jimmy drove to Chick-fil-a to get us breakfast."

"Alright," I said, opening the door to my room.

"Bowen?" I stopped quickly, turning back to Saige. She had looked fine at first, but now looking closer, I could see the tears brimming in her eyes. I walked over to her, pulling her face up to look at me.

"What's wrong?"

"Do you think she's ok?" The first tear rolled down her face.

I enveloped her in a hig, something she rarely let me do. "I know she will. You know Cass. She's strong. She doesn't let anything stop her." I rubbed my hand up and down her back, trying to calm her down. She pulled away a moment later, wiping a tear off of her face.

I looked down the stairs to see the door opening. The amazing smell of Chick-fil-a floated up the stairs as Jimmy came in. Saige wiped her face again before heading down the stairs.

I walked back into my room. I hadn't seen Saige like that since the divorce. She cared about Cassidy like a sister. This was a major blow to her, losing someone so close.

What was happening? First my panic attacks and now something was happening to Cassidy?

Why?

That was my silent question, why? God, why is this happening?

I walked back to my room, grabbing the bag I had ready, a book, and my phone. I picked it up, seeing the notification from mom. She had sent it last night to remind me of what time we needed to be out of here. 7 o'clock it read. It was about 6:30 now.

I quickly picked my small bag and the drawstring bag up and walked downstairs. I placed it next to where Saige had sat her stuff. I walked into the kitchen, seeing Saige and mom eating chicken biscuits. I grabbed one, giving a quick thank you, and showed down.

Man Chick-fil-a is good.

None of us spoke as we ate. Mom had already finished hers, Saige right behind her. I was alone in the kitchen, chewing a biscuit.

I hadn't had a panic attack since Cassidy, but right now I could feel it, seeping up through my veins. That biscuit didn't taste so good anymore.

I wrapped it up and put it in the fridge. I walked out into the living room.

The next few hours was extremely uneventful. We left, going on the longest drive ever. I fell asleep, dreaming the whole way.

I don't really remember what they were, but I remember something dark behind them. I woke up with a start, warranting a quick look from everyone in the car. I nodded my head.

We were about an hour away from the hospital. The time passed surprisingly quick. Soon we were in the parking garage, walking to the information desk.

"Hi," mom said, "Can you tell me what room Cassidy Cruce is in?"

The woman looked down at her computer typing in the name. "Third floor, Room 703." She stood up, walking around the desk, and pointed down the hall. "If you go down the hall and turn left after the emergency room, the elevators will be right there."

"Thank you." We walked down the hall, turned left, and finally found the elevators. "Third floor..." she mumbled, clicking the button.

We walked out, following the signs to the waiting room. We finally found it (after getting lost three or four different times).  It was empty, save for one family on the other side of the room. Their faces were tear streaked, eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. What were the Cruce's going to look like?

We sat down. Saige was quiet, fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. I put my hand over hers, giving her an assuring look. She was nervous as ca be. So was I.

But now it was time to think about her. We waited, and waited, and waited.

And then we were called back.
