Of course Ant wasn’t in class after that. I was partly glad he wasn’t so I wouldn’t have to face him in front of the others.

Around four, as I was leaving debate, I spotted Antanie down by the gym. He was wearing something different than earlier. I took note of his outfit as I approached him. He wore faded, light blue jeans and a white t shirt with a circular graphic in the center of a desert sunset. It looked like it came from Zumiez. Tied from the back of his neck to his hairline was a yellow and orange camo bandana. He watched me as I got closer.

“How long do you have?” I asked him.

“They said I might finish this school year.”

It all clicked why he had no future plans. Why he didn’t care about school. Why he wasn’t worried about getting arrested. My eyes watered. “What am I gonna do after you go?”

He shrugged. Go back to your life, like how you was before me.”

I shook my head. “No. I can’t do that.”

“Sure you can. Just forget about it all. Forget everything, like it never happened.”

“No, Ant. I don’t wanna forget.”
