Ghosts

They say

the ghosts we meet in dreams

are dead things from our pasts.

I believe that

but I also believe in ghosts.

Because physicality

is not the only reality

just as the present is not the only reality.

This makes dream interpretation difficult.

When my dead mother

comes to me in a dream,

I wake and wonder:

"Was that my mother

truly visiting me

from that other world?

Or was it some old thought of her?"

Same goes when

I visit a house

reputed to be haunted:

Have others truly seen ghosts here?

Or is this place a culmination

of all our wishes

to touch the lost, the past, the dead?"

I heard a ghost once

two of them actually.

It was early morning.

I had awakened from sleep.

And they were quite angry at me.

Perhaps because light

and the present

so often

push darkness

and the past

away.
