Because John wanted to bring Martha and Frances to America, bUT HE COULDN'T JUST TELL HIS SICK WIFE AND BABY TO TRAVEL ACROSS THE OCEAN TO A COUNTRY IN THE MIDDLE OF WAR—
So he couldn't tell them to come yet to America.
And let's not forget that then he dIED– he passed away. And so he couldn't ask them to come after the war because there was no John after the war!

I actually feel bad about Frances, not only her father but her mother also died not longbefore him. If I'm remembering well she was raised by Martha Laurens (the sister) though I'm not sure? I'll check that out.
We need a Frances protection squad plz.
