It was ten forty-five, the sky lit with stars, and Mia needed to escape.

Her parents weren't home. It was the first night she had to herself since Beverley broke in, and Mia could not stand remaining in a pool of eerie silence; watching soccer games from a different timezone. It was horrible, knowing that before all of this mess, Mia would be able to stay home all by herself when the stars came out to shine and the owls began to hoot.

Now all she wanted was to leave the house. Not only did it bring a series of awful memories, but a fountain of chills to flow over her body. It was kind of ironic, that Mia was frightened of being in her home when it should have been a place of security. Instead, she stepped outside, greeted by the cold and facing the immense darkness ahead.

Running helped her clear her mind, and sometimes it didn't, but she had to try something to make her feel more at ease and less in panic.

A puff of misty white clouds ran past her lips as she let out a soft breath against the harsh wind, using the hairband around her wrist to tie her previously flat-ironed curls into a sleek ponytail. The yoga pants and tight fleece she had on fought off the cold to an extent, and she knew that once she would start running, she would become one with the wind.

Inserting her earbuds, she switched on her music and allowed them to blast a song with an upbeat tempo, drowning out her thoughts and filling her brain with the sound of electronics instead. After stretching her limbs, she gave her house one more glance, taking note of the closed blinds behind the windows and the stillness it provided.

All it took was one glance and she was speeding to the opposite end of her home, wanting to be as far away from it as possible. Her heart rate began to amplify, and she slowed down into a casual jog, soaking up the moonlight and addressing her surroundings.

The streets are lined with houses, some filled with darkness and some revealing the owners through lit windows. Either way, some houses were busy whereas the streets at that time were secluded. People were positive that behind their locked doors they were safe, but Mia knew better.

It was easy to fool people. There was danger everywhere, just like how there was a storm behind the eyes of warmth and an earsplitting smile. Beverley.

Recapping the events of yesterday afternoon was all Mia could do for the whole day straight. She missed out a school day by lying to her parents and telling them she felt physically sick, but, truth be told, that translated to emotionally sick. After what Matias told her, she couldn't stop the feeling in her gut.

She felt like Beverley was hidden behind the masterpiece she had painted herself out to be.

At first, Mia couldn't believe it. It wasn't because she didn't, but she had no clue how to take the information and worried that it would only jeopardize Mia's view of her more. And it should, shouldn't it?
