Chapter 21

A Picture Says A Thousand Words

Gracie's POV

Sarah and I were sitting in the living room finishing her homework for today which was reading a book together and drawing her favorite part of her day.

We read Sleeping Beauty, Sarah's absolute favorite story and now she was drawing Aurora-the princess from the story.

Sarah hummed a low tune I couldn't quiet hear as she colored in the sleeping princess's gown. Cocking my head to the side I watched my daughter smile to herself dreamily with a dark curl over her eyes. Like every other girl her age Sarah wants to be a princess preferably one who is cursed into a long slumber.

Out of all the cute fairy tales she choose this one. Growing up I always wanted to be Cinderella, she was hard working and at the end she got her happily ever after.

As I did my chores I'd have that same dreamily look and hum a made up song. Especially when my mom and Ben would come stumbling home drunk, they were the ugly stepsisters.

"Can you pass me the brown?" Sarah asked

Reaching forward I gave her the over large crayon. Sarah thanked me as I taught her to do and went back to coloring. She drew a short lumpy shape leaning down towards the hairless princess. The prince, I smiled at the funny looking figures.

"Are you drawing Aurora?" I asked

"No, that's someone else." she shook her dark head

My brows knitted together, but that looks exactly like the picture in the story.

"Who is it?"

"You'll know." she smiled up at me

I stared at my daughter with a quizzical expression hoping for further explanation but that didn't come. Just as I was going to ask her who exactly she was drawing when the door bell rang.

Grabbing each side of the sofa I pulled myself up trying not to show my pain in front of Sarah even as I walked the few feet to the door. First I opened it a peak than all the way when I saw who it was.

"Mrs. Lucielle come in." I chirped happy to see her

It's been lonely all day even though Sarah was with me.

"Hello Gracie." she said as she hugged me tightly

Gritting my teeth together I ignored the aching in my side as Lucielle gave me one more squeeze before pulling away.

"Oh I missed you." she said as she peeled her coat off

"You just saw me yesterday." I laughed

Lucielle shrugged with a small grin. It was than I noticed the small shimmery ruby red bag she had hiding under her coat.

"Mrs. Lucielle!" Sarah squealed before she launched herself at Lucielle who caught her

I closed the door glad I wasn't the one being squished in that mini sandwich. My ribs ached just watching those two.

"My little pumpkin pie." Lucielle cooed as she kissed Sarah

They finally parted but Sarah kept close to her hip.

"This is for you cutie pie."

Sarah's eyes widened as she took the small bag and thanked Lucielle. That little rascal tore through the tissue paper with a a wide grin as she pulled out a small crystal tiara.

"Aunt Jackie's tiara." Sarah gasped as she bounced on the balls of her feet happily

"She saw you playing with it the other day and told me to bring it over. It's yours now."
