"I'm saying we need a new plan because next time, one of us is gonna be too hurt to heal," Derek's voice harshly echos throughout the spacious building catching my attention. I have been waiting for Derek to show up for almost an hour after arriving back at the train depot with Isaac. I, however, was not expecting Scott to be with him. I would expect the other two betas to be with him, but Boyd and Erica headed home to their families after leaving the rave because it's a school night.
After arriving back from our failed mission with Isaac, he had dozed off to sleep within fifteen minutes of sitting in the main area. And if Derek's volume goes any higher, he'll wake him from the sleep he direly needs. I know he didn't gain much sleep last night and with the night we had today, he must be exhausted. A good night's sleep should be sufficient enough for him.
"I get it," Scott replies as I usher them into the train cart to have this conversation. I don't want us disturbing Isaac while he is sleeping. "We can't save Jackson." I figured it'd take longer for Scott to come to that realization, but the sooner the better. Maybe now we can come to an agreement on a more suitable plan to rid this town of the Kanima, even though it's tougher to kill than we thought.
"We can't seem to kill him either," I tell them. "I've seen a lot of things in my years, Scott, but I have never seen anything like this."
Derek nods his head, "And every new moon's just gonna make him stronger."
"Then how do we stop him?" Scott asks.
Scott has this personality that I am quickly becoming accustomed to. He wants to save everyone and make sure they're out of harm's way. But he can't protect everyone. I only had one person I cared about protecting, and he's gone. It's just proof that you can't always protect the ones you love.
Derek shrugs, "I don't know. I don't even know if we can."
"Yeah, maybe we should just let the Argent's handle it," Scott suggests out of defeat.
Even though the Argents may know how to handle this, I'm not giving up. And knowing Derek, he isn't going to capitulate to a lizard either. I'm not going to be the first one to shy away from a fight.
"I'm the one who turned him. It's my fault," Derek admits.
I'm speechless. He actually took responsibility for his actions and didn't try to make what he did seem justifiable. That's one difference between him and I; I can admit to my truths. Derek always seems to turn his actions around onto someone else. He is imperious, he's ignorant, and that's what drives our feuds with one another.
"Yeah, but you didn't turn him into this," Scott reassures him.
I jerk my head in his direction, "Uh, don't take this moment away from me. He just admitted to being the cause of this, okay. This doesn't happen. Like ever." I want to enjoy this, then he can do his pep talk. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Of course, I don't want Derek to feel bad, I mean, I do, but I also don't. Derek's a sour wolf, not a pouty wolf. It doesn't feel right for him to not have a scowl, but that'll disappear on its own time. As for now, I want to soak in this image before it's gone forever. Consider it karma from going after teenagers and not telling them the truth about what they signed up for when accepting his bite.
"But this happened because of something in his past, right?" Scott questions, once again trying to soothe Derek after giving me a look.
"That's a legend in a book. It's not that simple." And just like that, the scowl is back.
"What do you mean? What are you not telling me?" Isn't that the million-dollar question. Derek never involves others in his plans, or thought processes, unless he wants to.
