For years River has hid her peculiarity from her family and friends, afraid that they would put her in an asylum like they did with her grandmother before River was born. River is able to see the dead, or better known as ghosts. At first, River could not believe that she could see ghosts, until she went to her grandfathers funeral when she was thirteen. But before River found out her gift, her grandmother told Miss Peregrine to take in her granddaughter on the night of her seventeenth birthday, and she did exactly that.
